About The Position

The Marine Mammal Systems Assistant III (MMA III) plays a crucial role in supporting the care and management of marine mammals, working closely with veterinary and biotech staff. This position involves providing customized care, monitoring animal health, and executing training plans for specific animals. The MMA III will also oversee and guide junior staff, ensuring the well-being of the animals and assisting in various operational tasks related to marine mammal care.

Requirements

  • Two years of marine mammal systems experience.
  • Basic open water scuba diving certification with a minimum of one year of experience.
  • Operational and navigation experience on small boats (40' or under).
  • USCG license (operator of un-inspected passenger vessels/6pac) or higher, or U.S. Navy Coxswain's certification.
  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • Ability to work flexible hours, including nights, holidays, and weekends.
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills.
  • Commitment to safety culture and policies.

Nice To Haves

  • Bachelor's degree in Marine Biology or a related field.
  • Advanced scuba diving certifications (e.g., dive master, instructor, commercial diver certification).
  • Current First Aid and CPR Certification.

Responsibilities

  • Serve as the primary handler for a specific marine mammal.
  • Provide non-supervisory oversight and guidance to MMA I and MMA II staff.
  • Monitor and observe animal behaviors and wellness, reporting findings to onsite personnel.
  • Complete animal working sessions, including body inspections and assessments of well-being.
  • Engage with animals through working sessions to rehearse and execute multiple behaviors in open water.
  • Record information about each session and the animal's performance.
  • Perform feedings and administer food supplements as needed.
  • Assist with basic animal husbandry tasks.
  • Provide diving support for operations, including enclosure inspection and maintenance.
  • Support fish house operations to prepare individually formulated rations for each animal.
  • Operate various watercraft as required for marine mammal projects.
  • Deter the presence of nuisance animals while following established procedures.
