About The Position

This Marine Fisheries LE Manager I is responsible for the supervision and daily operations of the Central District of NC Marine Patrol. It directs the law enforcement efforts of the DMF in the 2.7 million acres of ocean and coastal waters and 4000 miles of shoreline in 21 eastern counties of NC. The Law Enforcement Captain is responsible for the development and implementation of policies and procedures necessary for the DMF to carry out its law enforcement mission. The successful candidate will ensure proper interpretation of laws and Fisheries rules for Coastal Waters and recommends rule changes that enable the Division to meet its law enforcement mission and resource management objectives. The Law Enforcement Captain works closely with the Marine Patrol's Major to develop policies and enforcement guidelines to be followed by Marine Patrol officers to ensure that investigations, searches and seizures are made in accordance with applicable statutes in order to minimize risk and liability to the investigating officer, the division and the State of NC. This position is responsible for identifying and solving enforcement logistics and operational problems, providing communications, training/support for Marine Patrol personnel under their supervision and providing the framework for law enforcement consistency within the supervises unit. Additional responsibilities include projecting, compiling and maintaining an operational plan for the District and establishing enforcement priorities as they relate to patrol activities. This requires long-range projections, cost effectiveness of equipment and consistent review of expenditures in order to ensure operational stability. This position will recommend personnel actions to the Marine Patrol Major and implement necessary corrective measures. This employee has the supervisory responsibility for two Marine Patrol Sergeants, fourteen Marine Patrol Officers and one secretary.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in a related field from an appropriately accredited institution, and five years of progressive law enforcement experience; or equivalent combination of training and experience.
  • Basic Law Enforcement Certification under North Carolina Criminal Justice Training and Standards Commission.
  • Must possess or be able to obtain and maintain a valid driver’s license.

Responsibilities

  • This employee would oversee daily operations of a Marine Patrol Law Enforcement District.
  • This position addresses the law enforcement efforts of the Division of Marine Fisheries. In the 2.7 million acres of ocean and coastal waters and 4,000 miles of shoreline in 21 eastern counties of North Carolina.
  • This individual is responsible for the design, development, and implementation of policies and procedures for the DMF to carry out its law enforcement mission.
  • This employee has the supervisory responsibility for one of the Marine Patrol Districts, which includes three Marine Patrol Sergeants and MP Officers.
