About The Position

Carter Machinery Company, the authorized Caterpillar dealer for Virginia, West Virginia, Maryland, Delaware, and Washington D.C., is seeking Apprentice Marine Shop and Field Technicians in Chesapeake, Virginia. This position is part of the Technician Apprentice Program, which provides comprehensive training and development for individuals to accurately troubleshoot, diagnose, and perform standard mechanical repairs and complete overhauls on marine engines and propulsion systems. The program lasts for 15 months, during which apprentices will gain a solid understanding of electrical systems, marine engines, and propulsion systems fundamentals. Upon completion, apprentices will be fully accredited under the Department of Labor Apprenticeship program. Candidates for the Apprentice Marine Shop & Field Technician role should have completed a post-secondary diesel engine or related program, or possess two years of mechanical job experience. A high school diploma or GED is required, and experience with military equipment is considered a plus. The role demands a self-starter who can work with limited supervision and meet deadlines, demonstrating a strong mechanical aptitude. Excellent customer satisfaction skills and the ability to thrive in a fast-paced environment are essential. Proficiency in computer use, particularly with Microsoft Office products and service software, is required to complete service reports and provide pertinent details for work orders. Strong written and verbal communication skills are necessary for accurately documenting diagnoses and repairs performed. The technician must prepare required documentation, including work orders, parts lists, and time cards, in an accurate and timely manner. The ability to read and understand operating manuals is also crucial. The role requires self-direction, organization, and the ability to work as part of a team while prioritizing workload and providing excellent customer service. Flexibility to work all shifts and overtime as needed to meet customer demands is expected.
