Texas Health Action is seeking applicants for the MAP Enrollment Internship, to work under the direction of the Director of Patient Support Services. The MAP Enrollment Intern will be responsible for assisting patients and community members with enrollment and renewal into Central Health’s Medical Access Program (MAP) and MAP Basic. This internship provides direct client assistance, verifies eligibility documentation, and ensures timely application submissions through the appropriate systems.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or GED.
  • Competent in Microsoft Office Suite (Excel, Word, Outlook)
  • Strong accuracy in verifying documentation and entering patient information.
  • Adherence to HIPAA and organizational policies regarding patient data.
  • Ability to explain complex eligibility criteria clearly and compassionately.
  • Demonstrated ability to work effectively with diverse communities.
  • Capable of handling multiple cases, prioritizing tasks, and meeting deadlines.
  • Works cooperatively with clinical and administrative staff to support shared goals.
  • Identifies and resolves barriers to patient enrollment.
  • Professional and empathetic in all client interactions.
  • Flexibility to support occasional weekend or outreach events.
  • Ability to communicate clearly in person, by phone, and in writing.
  • Hearing sufficient to perceive detailed information and instructions.
  • Ability to perform repetitive hand and wrist motions for computer input.
  • Ability to lift or carry up to 15 pounds occasionally.
  • Ability to focus amid office noise, foot traffic, and interruptions.

Nice To Haves

  • 1–2 years of experience in healthcare access, case management, or social services.
  • Prior experience with patient eligibility programs (MAP, Medicaid, CHIP, or similar).
  • Demonstrated experience working with vulnerable or uninsured populations.
  • Experience with data entry, documentation management, and online eligibility systems.
  • Bilingual (English/Spanish) strongly preferred.
  • Enrollment in an accredited Medical Assistant program
  • Completion of core classroom instruction prior to externship
  • CPR certification (may be required)
  • Professional appearance and demeanor
  • Ability to maintain patient confidentiality and follow clinic policies
  • Liability insurance (as required by the school or clinic)

Responsibilities

  • Conduct patient screenings for MAP and MAP Basic eligibility, verifying income, residency, and insurance status.
  • Assist patients in completing and submitting applications through the Central Health/VeritySource system.
  • Provide education to clients regarding available services, renewal timelines, and covered benefits under MAP.
  • Maintain up-to-date documentation and case notes in approved electronic databases.
  • Coordinate with clinic teams to ensure patients can access care following enrollment approval.
  • Track pending applications and follow up with clients to obtain missing information or documentation.
  • Participate in community outreach events to raise awareness and facilitate MAP enrollment.
  • Maintain compliance with HIPAA and all organizational privacy standards.
  • Assist in generating reports and statistics related to MAP enrollments and renewals.
