Our employees are not only part of history, they're making history. Northrop Grumman’s Space Sector is seeking a Manufacturing Technician – Level 2 to join our team in Charlotte, NC. An organization within Northrop Grumman, SYNOPTICS is the world-wide leader in the growth, fabrication, and coating of crystalline materials used in laser systems. These “solid-state” laser crystals are used in products ranging from medical lasers to military laser systems. The Charlotte facility has been operating for over 40 years in the laser industry and has developed the reputation of providing the highest quality products with timely deliveries. Within the facility, solid-state oxide and fluoride crystals are grown from a high-temperature melt. SYNOPTICS has full optical fabrication capabilities for various plano and spherical geometries. Requirements

  • High School diploma or equivalent and 2 years additional education and/or related experience.
  • No clearance required to start
  • 2 plus years’ experience in chemical processing or in a wet lab is required. This can include lab work in postsecondary education
  • Understanding of chemical processes and reactions is required
  • Visual acuity, manual dexterity skills, and strict compliance to process instructions are required
  • Must be safety conscious and detail-oriented
  • Must be able to assist engineering with troubleshooting and future process development.

Nice To Haves

  • AS or BA in a STEM field is strongly preferred, ideally in chemistry.
  • Hazardous Materials Used on the job: Hydrofluoric Acid, Potassium Hydroxide, other acids, Acetone

Responsibilities

  • Operate and maintain furnaces and other equipment to produce fluoride materials.
  • Accurately weigh, mix, and transfer chemicals before and after processing
  • Follow chemical safety protocols, including wearing proper personal protective equipment and understanding safety data sheets.
  • Handle hazardous materials, including concentrated acids and bases.
  • Monitor equipment, including valves and pressure readings, and respond to alarm signals to ensure safe and proper operation
  • Maintain organized records, including data logs and chemical inventory.
  • Assist engineering with ongoing process development and improvements
  • Support other activities in the R&D and Crystal Growth departments as needed
  • Provide clear communication across departments, including production, facilities, and environmental health and safety
