About The Position

The Manufacturing Process and Materials Technologist plays a critical role in operating industrial and laboratory equipment for processes such as additive manufacturing and subtractive machining as well as for ensuring the reliability, safety, and efficiency of such operations. This position is vital to supporting a range of manufacturing research and development projects through hands-on operation, development of operational procedures, completion of maintenance, execution of various non-routine tasks, capture of quality measurements, and assistance in troubleshooting and resolving technical issues. This individual will be responsible, detail-oriented, and highly collaborative, bringing a positive, can-do attitude to every task. Passionate about solving problems and delivering results, the ideal candidate is curious about the intricacies of manufacturing processes and seeks continual learning and growth.

Requirements

  • Experience operating and maintaining industrial or research equipment for processes such as metal additive manufacturing, CNC or manual machining, welding, cutting, etc.
  • Attention to detail in operating and maintaining equipment.
  • Excellent documentation skills for creating operations reports/records and tracking maintenance history.
  • Computer skills such as inputting and reviewing data in spreadsheets, word processing, email, etc.
  • Strong mechanical aptitude for troubleshooting and repairing mechanical equipment and components.
  • This position requires access to technology or intellectual property that is subject to export control requirements. Candidates must be qualified for such access without an export control license.
  • Adherence to safety protocols in a technical or industrial setting.
  • Must meet requirements for export control regulations, able to handle sensitive technologies and intellectual property.
  • Must be able to wear a full-face respirator in the execution of responsibilities.
  • Must be able to lift up to 50lbs.
  • Must be able to walk, stand, squat, and bend for long duration of time.
  • Must be able to wear all other appropriate Personal Protection Equipment.

Nice To Haves

  • Completion of an Industrial Apprenticeship Program or Technical/ Community College Industrial based program.
  • 2-3 years of experience in manufacturing industry or laboratory setting as a process operator, maintenance technician or similar role, demonstrating knowledge of machine operation, maintenance tasks and procedures.
  • Advanced troubleshooting skills, including the ability to diagnose and solve complex technical issues.
  • Basic understanding of electrical principles for diagnosing electrical systems and components.
  • A continuous improvement mindset, actively identifying and implementing opportunities for improving processes and equipment reliability.
  • Ability to create and update procedures for equipment operation and maintenance based on knowledge of processes and research goals.

Responsibilities

  • Operate and maintain industrial and research equipment for processes such as additive manufacturing (especially laser powder bed fusion) and machining to support ongoing activities.
  • Fabricate fixtures and test setups via manual machine operation, welding, and assembly
  • Document and execute operational procedures to ensure equipment runs safely and efficiently.
  • Accurately record operation and maintenance activities and maintain comprehensive documentation to track maintenance history.
  • Create and execute preventive maintenance schedules to maximize equipment reliability and minimize downtime.
  • Troubleshoot equipment and processes, identify technical problems, and implement solutions as part of a collaborative project team.
  • Adhere to all safety protocols and guidelines to ensure a safe working environment and prevent accidents during maintenance and operation tasks.
  • Work closely with team members to ensure operational and maintenance goals align with technical and research objectives, contributing to the overall success of the team.
  • Handle technology and intellectual property subject to export control regulations, ensuring compliance with all requirements.
