This job can be described as: At Chesterton, we have a laser focus on our customers. The Manufacturing Operator Lead is a frontline manufacturing position responsible for producing our Mechanical Packing material. This job requires a combination of mechanical maintenance skills (utilizing machinery and various hand tools) physical laboring skills and quality skills. In this role, the employee should be able to direct the activities of other employees as well as train them, operate a variety of equipment in a production/processing operation, measure and check raw materials to ensure product compliance, and maintain proper manufacturing records to comply with department regulations.

Requirements

  • Ability to make decisions based on a set of predetermined parameters.
  • Ability to operate various machines.
  • Ability to read, comprehend and follow written/verbal instructions and sequences of events.
  • Ability to lift up to 75 lbs. manually on a frequent basis, uses supporting equipment when necessary.
  • Ability to wear a respirator as needed.
  • Manual dexterity to handle small sharp and/or specialized tools.
  • 4-6 years’ experience in a manufacturing environment preferred.
  • Ability to operate a computer.
  • Ability to operate a forklift if required for the role.
  • Ability to work in a manufacturing environment.
  • Ability to work under pressure and work well with others.
  • Ability to perform more than one function at a time.

Responsibilities

  • Ability to operate multiple work centers proficiently in either the Braiding area and/or Liveloading area. This could include running various types of braiding machines, winders, twisters, coating lines, coiling machines, sizing presses, packaging lines as well as others.
  • Ability to set up and efficiently run machinery following the appropriate process specifications and/or work instructions. Must be able to troubleshoot the machines, fix basic to difficult problems and know when to seek help for more complicated issues.
  • Ability to identify, troubleshoot and correct any complex product quality problems during the production process.
  • Ability to use all common hand tools in the shop such as cutting equipment, measuring equipment, weighing equipment and various other hand tools for operating equipment.
  • Operates computer to execute order inquiries, cycle count adjustments, and other transactions as needed.
  • Ability to perform cycle counts and research count discrepancies.
  • Where applicable has an expertise with using our business system or other computer applications to complete daily tasks, run reports and research problems.
  • May assist Engineering with developing new products, assist Operations with finding root cause of customer complaints or root cause of in process quality problems.
  • Works under minimal supervision. Handles complex issues and problems and refers only the most complex issues to higher-level staff.
  • Directs the activities of others. Ability to cross train newer operators effectively on multiple work centers.
  • May assist supervisor with employee relations responsibilities, i.e., discipline, interviewing candidates, timecards, overtime scheduling. Acts on behalf of the supervisor in his or her absence. Support completion of department goals as defined by management regarding efficiency and productivity improvements.
