About The Position

The Lumber Manufactory (TLM) is building the future of sustainable lumber with next-generation sawmill technology. We design and operate state-of-the-art modular sawmills that produce high-grade dimensional wood products with greater efficiency and less waste. Backed by leading investors including Cantos, Slow Ventures, Susa Ventures, Banter Capital, Humba Ventures, and Ravelin Capital. We are looking for a hands-on Manufacturing Engineer with a strong mechanical foundation to lead process improvement and continuous improvement at our New Albany, MS mill. This is a floor-level role with real ownership. You will not just be collecting data or facilitating conversations. You will be the person who looks at a machine, understands what is happening inside it, and figures out why it is failing.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering or closely related discipline with significant mechanical coursework
  • 3+ years of hands-on experience in a manufacturing environment, with direct ownership of engineering projects
  • Ability to apply mechanical first principles in order to look at a machine, understand what is happening inside it, and diagnose why it is failing
  • Demonstrated experience diagnosing and solving mechanical problems on the production floor, not just supporting others who did
  • Strong problem-solving instincts and comfort working directly on heavy equipment and industrial machinery

Nice To Haves

  • Working knowledge of Lean manufacturing, continuous improvement, and standard work
  • Experience with statistical process control or data-driven manufacturing approaches
  • Background in heavy equipment, industrial manufacturing, or wood products
  • Ability to independently own projects in a fast-paced startup environment

Responsibilities

  • Lead hands-on process improvement across safety, quality, throughput, and cost
  • Diagnose and resolve mechanical failures on the production floor using first principles, not just data
  • Drive day-to-day production stability through root cause analysis, line balancing, and bottleneck elimination
  • Design and implement equipment, tooling, and automation solutions to improve repeatability and reduce labor time
  • Lead structured CI initiatives including 5S, Kaizen events, waste reduction, and cycle time improvements
  • Own projects end-to-end: from identifying the problem, to selecting materials and solutions, to implementation
  • Support new product introduction, pilot builds, and capacity planning as we scale
  • Build and maintain production metrics that keep improvement work data-driven and prioritized

Benefits

  • 100% employer-paid health coverage for employees and dependents (medical, dental, and vision)
  • 100% employer-paid life insurance and disability coverage
  • Paid time off and company holidays
  • The opportunity to help build something from the ground up in an essential, evolving industry
