About The Position

Mainstream Engineering is seeking a highly motivated Manufacturing Engineering Intern for Summer 2026. This position offers hands-on experience supporting the transition of innovative thermal control and energy conversion technologies from R&D into production. The selected candidate will work directly with experienced manufacturing and design engineers to support production processes, improve manufacturability, and assist with process documentation and testing. Projects support a diverse portfolio of programs for U.S. government agencies including the Department of Defense (DoD), Department of Energy (DOE), Department of Transportation (DOT), as well as commercial clients. This internship provides real-world exposure to manufacturing operations in a fast-paced, deadline-driven environment. Interns will gain experience in process development, fixture design, production troubleshooting, data analysis, quality support, and continuous improvement initiatives.

Requirements

  • Currently enrolled in an ABET-accredited Mechanical Engineering program
  • Minimum cumulative GPA of 3.3 across all completed degrees
  • Experience with 3D CAD software
  • Working knowledge of GD&T
  • Strong mechanical aptitude and comfort using hand tools and basic shop equipment
  • Interest in manufacturing engineering and process development within a production environment

Nice To Haves

  • Graduate-level candidates preferred
  • Prior manufacturing or engineering internship experience preferred

Responsibilities

  • Assist in developing and improving manufacturing processes and work instructions
  • Support process validation, production builds, and troubleshooting efforts
  • Design or modify fixtures, tooling, and test setups to improve efficiency and quality
  • Collaborate with R&D, quality, and production teams to enhance product manufacturability
  • Conduct time studies, collect production data, and support continuous improvement initiatives
  • Participate in technical documentation and proposal support as needed
