Manufacturing Engineer III (Tooling & CNC)

Pursuit AerospaceEastford, CT

About The Position

As a Manufacturing Engineer III (Tooling and CNC), you will design and develop production tooling and CNC programs for aerospace sheet metal fabrication and machining operations. This role includes two core functions: the design of forming tools, machining fixtures, and related tooling, and CNC programming for production part machining and internal tooling fabrication. You will collaborate with Manufacturing Engineering, Production, Toolroom, and Quality teams to deliver manufacturable, reliable solutions. You will own tooling and CNC deliverables from concept through prove-out. This role is hands-on and execution-focused, working closely with the internal Toolroom to accelerate learning and iteration. You may use rapid prototyping methods, including additive manufacturing, to test concepts and develop soft tooling without impacting Toolroom capacity.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • 5+ years of relevant experience in tool design, CNC programming, or manufacturing engineering, or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Demonstrated proficiency in NX CAM for CNC programming, including program development and verification.
  • Proficiency in parametric CAD systems for tool design (e.g., NX, Solid Edge, or similar).
  • Strong working knowledge of GD&T (ASME Y14.5) and engineering drawing interpretation.
  • Experience developing and releasing CNC programs for machining and/or EDM processes.
  • Ability to design tooling that meets functional requirements and is manufacturable within available Toolroom capabilities.
  • Ability to work effectively across Manufacturing Engineering, Production, Toolroom, and Quality Teams.
  • Must be authorized to work in the U.S. on a full-time basis without sponsorship now or in the future. The Company cannot offer employment to visa holders who require employer sponsorship in the future or cannot work now on a full-time basis.
  • Must be able to perform work subject to ITAR/EAR regulations.

Nice To Haves

  • Degree in Mechanical, Manufacturing, Aerospace Engineering, or a related field.
  • Experience working in an AS9100 environment.
  • Hands-on experience with sheet metal fabrication, fabricated assemblies, and machining processes.
  • Experience designing tooling for sheet metal fabrication and machining.
  • Experience programming CNC mills, lathes, EDM (wire and sinker), and multi-axis laser systems (5- or 6-axis).
  • Experience working with aerospace materials including nickel alloys, stainless steels, and titanium.
  • Familiarity with forming behavior and tooling considerations such as springback.
  • Experience with CAM post processor configuration or modification.
  • Experience with rapid prototyping methods, including additive manufacturing.
  • Experience with ERP or MRP systems.
  • Strong problem-solving and analytical skills with the ability to manage multiple projects.
  • Effective communication and interpersonal skills for cross-functional collaboration.

Responsibilities

  • Collaborate with Manufacturing Engineers, Production, Toolmakers, and Quality to define tooling and CNC requirements.
  • Design and draft production tooling for sheet metal fabrication and machining using NX and parametric CAD.
  • Apply GD&T and tool design best practices to ensure manufacturability and compliance with engineering requirements.
  • Select appropriate tooling materials and design approaches appropriate for aerospace forming and machining applications.
  • Develop, verify, and release CNC programs for machining and EDM processes in NX, ensuring reliable and repeatable execution.
  • Work closely with the internal Toolroom to ensure designs are practical and compatible with available Toolroom capabilities.
  • Support tooling builds and CNC prove-outs in partnership with Manufacturing Engineers and Quality Engineers.
  • Coordinate with external vendors as needed to support tooling fabrication.
  • Contribute to the development of internal tooling and CNC programming standards.
  • Provide technical guidance and mentorship to peers and Toolroom personnel.
  • Manage multiple tooling and CNC programming tasks while meeting project expectations and timelines.
