This position is responsible for technical process development, improvement, and monitoring of system processes and quality. The engineer will be hands-on, physically producing production parts. They will support multiple existing products and be involved in production process development. Although the location of the position is in Rochester, NY, from time to time it may be required to undertake duties at other Thorlabs locations.

Requirements

  • Minimum of 3 years of experience in a related role and/or optical manufacturing environment.
  • Bachelor’s Degree in a relevant technical field
  • Demonstrated ability to work in a team environment and comply with high quality standards.
  • Experience with manufacturing, product development in an R&D / New Product Development Environment
  • Familiarity with the application of optics and the fabrication of glasses used to create optical components
  • Experience using standard measurement equipment
  • Strong attention to detail.
  • Strong ability to shift from one task to another to address changing production priorities.
  • Basic mathematic knowledge.
  • Proficient in computer skills such as Microsoft Office, and CAD (Solidworks)

Responsibilities

  • Able to work in an optics and mechanics production area with very high degree of difficulty processes.
  • Must be able to understand and write work instructions and technical drawings for a wide range of products, as well as, properly manufacture the final product to the highest of quality standards with a goal of zero scrap or rework.
  • Collect and analyze process data to highlight issues and opportunities for improvement.
  • Engage in process development projects with Engineering on a regular basis.
  • Participate on new product development projects with Engineering.
  • Model and analyze process design parameters in relevant software tools.
  • Troubleshoot and resolve process issues.
  • Maintain proper records in a manufacturing database.
  • Participate in Continuous Improvement efforts.
  • Setup, measure, and analyze parts using metrology devices such as hand tools, microscopes, interferometers, and profilometers.
  • Perform daily maintenance and upkeep of assigned machines in area.
  • Cross trained to be able to work in multiple production areas.
  • Handle, clean, and inspect precision optics, and mechanical components.
  • Train and mentor less experienced team members.
  • Comply with the company safety program and maintain a clean and organized work area.
