About The Position

The Manufacturing Engineer (Fiber Optics) supports the design, development, and optimization of manufacturing processes for Teledyne DGO’s high-reliability interconnect solutions. This role focuses heavily on fiber-optic products and assemblies, ensuring robust manufacturing methods, consistent product quality, and efficient production flow. The engineer will collaborate closely with Production, Quality, Design Engineering, and Program Management to drive improvements and support both legacy and new product introduction (NPI) initiatives.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in Engineering (Mechanical, Manufacturing, Optical, Electrical, or related field).
  • 2+ years of hands-on manufacturing engineering experience, preferably in fiber-optic assembly or precision electromechanical manufacturing.
  • Strong understanding of fiber-optic handling, polishing, inspection, and test methods.
  • Experience with process documentation, PFMEA, SPC, and root cause analysis tools (5 Why, Fishbone, DMAIC).
  • Proficiency in CAD software (SolidWorks preferred).
  • Excellent problem-solving skills and ability to support fast-paced production environments.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience with high-reliability or harsh-environment products (aerospace, defense, subsea).
  • Familiarity with fiber-optic testing equipment (OTDR, optical power meters, interferometers).
  • Lean Six Sigma certification (Green Belt or higher).
  • Experience working in an AS9100 or ISO9001 quality environment.
  • Understanding of epoxy bonding, curing processes, and micro-assembly techniques.

Responsibilities

  • Develop, implement, and optimize manufacturing processes for fiber-optic assemblies and related interconnect products.
  • Create and maintain detailed work instructions, assembly procedures, process flow diagrams, PFMEAs, and control plans.
  • Identify opportunities for waste reduction, throughput improvement, and process stabilization using Lean and Six Sigma methodologies.
  • Lead root cause analysis and implement corrective/preventive actions for production issues.
  • Support termination, polishing, splicing, alignment, and testing of fiber-optic components.
  • Develop standardized processes for cleaning, handling, and inspection of optical fibers and connectors.
  • Evaluate and qualify fiber-optic materials, tooling, adhesives, cleaning agents, connectors, and test equipment.
  • Troubleshoot optical performance issues including insertion loss, return loss, and contamination-related defects.
  • Provide daily engineering support to manufacturing teams to ensure efficient, safe, and high-quality production.
  • Train operators/technicians on updated processes, tooling, and best practices.
  • Lead implementation of new equipment, jigs, and fixtures to improve consistency and productivity.
  • Drive resolution of nonconformances, scrap, and rework trends.
  • Collaborate with Design Engineering to review fiber-optic drawings, specifications, and models for manufacturability (DFM).
  • Participate in prototype builds and transition designs into stable production processes.
  • Support qualification builds, first article inspections (FAIs), and design/process validation testing.
  • Ensure compliance with customer, industry, and internal manufacturing standards.
  • Maintain accurate documentation within Teledyne’s quality management system and ERP/MRP tools.
  • Support audit activities and create engineering change orders (ECOs) as required.
