Oertel Metal Works is seeking an experienced Manufacturing Drafter to support our engineering and fabrication teams. This role is responsible for transforming design concepts into detailed drawings used for estimating, manufacturing, and fabrication. Working closely with engineers, estimators, and production teams, the Manufacturing Drafter plays a key role in ensuring designs are accurate, manufacturable, and aligned with project specifications. Requirements

  • 3+ years of drafting experience or a drafting degree (or equivalent experience)
  • Strong AutoCAD skills; experience with Inventor or other 3D tools is a plus
  • Experience in a manufacturing or metal fabrication environment, with an understanding of how drawings translate to the shop floor
  • Knowledge of fabrication processes (bending, rolling, material layout) and ability to adjust drawings accordingly
  • Strong attention to detail, math/geometry skills, and ability to manage multiple priorities in a team environment
  • Degree or technical certification in Drafting, Engineering Design, or a related field preferred; or equivalent experience
  • At least 3 years experience in a Drafter or similar technical design role preferred

Responsibilities

  • Take customer-provided designs and translate them into detailed, fabrication-ready drawings for shop use
  • Break down assemblies into individual components, creating drawings for each piece to support accurate manufacturing
  • Apply practical fabrication knowledge, including flattening rolled materials, accounting for bend allowances, and adjusting designs for production
  • Partner closely with shop personnel, estimators, and engineers to ensure drawings are clear, buildable, and aligned with fabrication capabilities
  • Review and revise drawings based on specifications, material constraints, and shop feedback
  • Support estimating and production teams with technical documentation throughout the project lifecycle
