About The Position

The Managing Principal Systems Analysis will work with and lead a small group of talented and dedicated people who use creative analytic techniques to solve hard problems. You will have a unique position within the company, leading a group that is central to Intuitive's efforts in system controls and user interface design. The team will own the software aspects of the “feel” of the system and its clinical performance, through the control theoretic, haptic, and algorithmic aspects of the embedded and ancillary software. Design input will include feedback from surgeons and our clinical engineers. You will contribute directional insights to the Advanced Product Development function and support it with your staff.

Requirements

  • Specific knowledge of control theory, and tele-presence system design.
  • Minimum of 10 years experience controlling complex electro-mechanical systems with embedded software and firmware, preferably including telepresence experience.
  • Hands-on engineering manager with minimum 5 years proven ability to work well in a team environment.
  • Comfortable with all phases of the product development lifecycle including design, implementation, debug, verification, qualification, and transfer.
  • Exceptional analysis skills, knowledge of Matlab and analysis tools that drive design excellence.
  • Detailed knowledge of and experience working with robotic design components including sensors, motors, drive trains and amplifiers.

Nice To Haves

  • Exceptional project management, planning and change management skills.
  • Medical product experience preferred.
  • Ability to support/manage/influence cross functional teams in the design of complex robotic systems.
  • Experience designing products in a highly regulated environment.

  • Budgets, project/program cost tracking and other technical management administrative experience.

Responsibilities

  • Provide leadership support and functionally manage a small team capable of developing and executing the Systems Analysis function.
  • Develop and execute telepresence system control and dynamics-based safety algorithms.
  • Develop telepresence system signal processing algorithms, including calibration, haptics, friction and gravity compensation, and calibration software used elsewhere in the company.
  • Evaluate robotic system performance, 'feel', and aspects of user interface, including development of metrics to evaluate these.
  • Define and conduct human factors testing for new products.
  • Contribute to product design (mechanical and electrical systems) to ensure optimal system performance.
  • Continuously improve the System Analysis function, applying metrics of performance and comparing against best known practices.
  • Interface with Software and System Test to develop packages that meet product and company needs.
  • Lead/support the Systems Analysis team to deliver unit-tested software fulfilling those needs.
  • Interface with the Mechanical Engineering function, and contribute to mechanism design and prototype evaluation.
  • Ensure that intellectual property is safeguarded and developed in a timely fashion.
  • Manage the team to proactively generate intellectual property.
  • Ensure design engineers follow appropriate design history file guidelines per FDA requirements.
  • Establish group priorities and personal work goals consistent with overall product development goals.
  • Assign tasks, set priorities, establish metrics and track progress.
  • Assess employee performance and provide coaching to improve performance.
  • Provide administrative leadership/control for planning, staffing, budgeting, and project/program cost tracking.
