The Managing Principal Architect leads the Architecture practice across the enterprise, driving the development and evolution of architecture capabilities to meet organizational goals. This role establishes governance, frameworks, and standards, and at the same time, manages and grows a team of solution architects. This position is a hands-on leader with a proven track record of implementing architecture practices, driving portfolio rationalization, and delivering measurable business value through strategic initiatives.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in computer science, Information Technology, Engineering, or related field.
  • 7-10 years of experience in technical architecture, application architecture, and systems integration.
  • 4+ years of hands-on experience in application portfolio management and enterprise architecture.
  • Expertise in application portfolio assessment and rationalization methodologies.
  • Proficiency in TCO analysis, cost modeling, and migration strategy planning.
  • Strong integration expertise across REST APIs, SOAP, and middleware technologies.
  • Proven success in at least three of the following areas: Application portfolio discovery and assessment in complex environments (100+ applications).
  • Application rationalization achieving significant cost savings or portfolio optimization.
  • Integration architecture design across diverse technology stacks.
  • Cloud migration initiatives (AWS preferred) with substantial application assessments or migrations.
  • Ecosystem mapping and technical documentation for large-scale environments.
  • Hands-on experience with AWS services (e.g., EC2, S3, RDS, Lambda) and cloud migration approaches.
  • Ability to create clear, actionable technical artifacts (diagrams, specifications, data flows).
  • Strong interpersonal skills to build relationships with technical and business stakeholders.
  • Familiarity with regulatory requirements (e.g., FERC, NERC CIP, GDPR, CCPA) and their technical implementation.
  • Broad technical knowledge across legacy systems and modern cloud-native applications.
  • Self-starter with the ability to navigate ambiguous environments, solve complex problems, and deliver results.
  • Systems thinking to analyze complex interdependencies and identify improvement opportunities.
  • Results-oriented mindset with a focus on delivering measurable value.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience in regulated industries (e.g., energy, utilities, financial services) is preferred.
  • Certifications such as AWS Solutions Architect, TOGAF, or Application Portfolio Management preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Architecture Practice Leadership Oversees daily operations of the Architecture practice, including roadmap execution, resource planning, and capability building.
  • Develops and implements architecture frameworks and methodologies aligned with organizational needs (e.g., COBIT 2019, TOGAF, Gartner EA Framework).
  • Drives tangible business value through initiatives such as application portfolio rationalization, cost optimization, and technology debt reduction.
  • Establishes credibility and influence across business units through impactful delivery of results.
  • Architectural Governance Facilitates architecture reviews, standards approval, and exception management processes.
  • Establishes governance frameworks for decision-making, technology evaluation, and compliance.
  • Leads enterprise-scale technology evaluations and strategic investment decisions.
  • Develops and enforces architecture standards, ensuring practical alignment with organizational goals.
  • Global Architecture Collaboration Represents North American architecture needs in global forums and collaborate with France-based teams.
  • Assesses global standards for regional applicability while maintaining strong partnerships with global leadership.
  • Team Leadership & Development Manages and mentors Senior Business Architect and Senior Technical Architect, fostering professional growth and team development.
  • Scales the team in alignment with practice maturity and business demands.
  • Builds team capabilities through training, knowledge sharing, and hands-on engagement.
  • Strategic Architecture & Transformation Defines the target-state architecture vision aligned with business strategy and regulatory requirements.
  • Leads transformative initiatives, including cloud migration, application modernization, and portfolio rationalization.
  • Partners with leadership on architecture strategy and practice evolution, ensuring alignment with enterprise objectives.
  • Develops business cases for architectural initiatives that clearly demonstrate ROI and business impact.
