The Managing Editor at the University of Chicago Press is responsible for overseeing the academic editorial offices for several journals. This role involves managing the peer review process, developing guidelines for contributors and reviewers, and liaising between various stakeholders including editors, authors, and the scholarly community. The Managing Editor will also contribute to discussions on publishing strategies and editorial initiatives, ensuring that the journals maintain high standards of scholarly publishing.

  • Manage the operation of the academic journal office for several journals.
  • Oversee the peer review process including developing and implementing editorial and journal policies.
  • Track progress of manuscripts from submission through peer review to final decision and manage the peer review pipeline.
  • Ensure that all manuscripts are delivered on time, within page budget, and meet the standards of the University of Chicago Press.
  • Work with production, editorial, electronic publishing, and peer-review support to troubleshoot and solve problems.
  • Manage and track publication agreements, permissions requests, and perform other administrative management functions.
  • Liaise between the Press, Editors, editorial board members, authors, and reviewers, including daily correspondence with all stakeholders.
  • Prepare monthly and annual reports of journal-wide statistics as needed.
  • Represent the journals and the Press at academic meetings as needed.
  • Collaborate with authors to resolve routine and moderate problems using existing procedures and to clarify meaning.
  • Assist with quality control by proofreading edited manuscripts.
  • Coordinate all stages of manuscript editing and proof review up to the time the book is bound and edit and approve catalog and jacket materials with guidance from others.
  • Perform other related work as needed.
  • Minimum college or university degree in a related field.
  • 2-5 years of work experience in a related job discipline.
  • Master's degree.
  • At least 3 years experience in a similar role in scholarly journal publishing.
  • Experience with peer review, publishing ethics, and scholarly communication.
  • Familiarity with Microsoft Office Suite.
  • Knowledge of Adobe products, Editorial Manager, or another peer review software.
