About The Position

The Managing Director of the Sport Science Institute (SSI) plays a crucial role in supporting the Senior Vice President and Chief Medical Officer in shaping and executing the strategic direction of the institute. This position involves overseeing daily operations, managing budgets, and representing the SSI on health and safety issues. The director will also supervise staff, lead research initiatives, and ensure compliance with policies while fostering collaboration with various stakeholders.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree required; Advanced degree preferred.
  • Minimum of eight to ten years of administrative, policy, and/or legislative work experience, preferably in medicine/health care or a membership organization.
  • Eight years of personnel management and/or supervisory experience.
  • Demonstrated leadership and management skills, including effective problem-solving, fairness, and decisiveness.
  • Exceptional written and oral communication skills, with the ability to engage and collaborate with C-Suite executives.
  • Ability to work well with diverse groups of individuals.
  • Established background and knowledge of college athletics.

Nice To Haves

  • Doctorate (PhD, EdD, or DrPH) in sport or exercise science, athletic training, public health, epidemiology, or a related field, or MD/DO with special qualification in sports medicine.
  • National reputation as a leader in sport science or exercise science.
  • Demonstrated teaching skills and success with scholarly publications.
  • Knowledge and understanding of the NCAA's structure and function.

Responsibilities

  • Support the leadership of the Senior Vice President of SSI and Chief Medical Officer in strategic direction development and execution.
  • Lead and manage day-to-day operational oversight of all SSI programs and initiatives.
  • Serve as Unit Fiscal Officer, managing the department budget and business relationships with regular financial forecasting.
  • Represent the SSI and NCAA on health and safety issues, acting as a liaison to medical organizations and sport governing bodies.
  • Supervise three SSI directors and the SSI coordinator, overseeing personnel needs including hiring, onboarding, and performance management.
  • Provide leadership and management to SSI research initiatives and oversee financial and business management of relevant committees and grants.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
