About The Position

Position Summary Reporting to the Chief Schools Officer or Deputy Chief Schools Officer, the Managing Director of Schools (MDOS) manages and supports a team of School Leaders (SLs) in a consistent, well-informed manner leading to high performance leadership, continually increasing the number of students who experience joy and achieve academic excellence at our schools. The MDOS is tasked with the talent development of the school leaders they manage and is accountable for the outcomes of the schools they lead. The MDOS will most likely work at the elementary and/or middle school level. The MDOS partners with other MDOSs in the region to drive the teaching and learning vision at KIPP NorCal, owning various cross-team responsibilities, and serves on the Lead Learning Team, alongside the Managing Director of Academics, Director of School Culture and Managing Director of Special Education. Reports to: Deputy Chief Schools Officer

Requirements

  • Demonstrated success leading school improvement initiatives that close student achievement gaps between racial, ethnic, and economic groups.
  • A strong desire to collaborate with school leaders and central office teammates.
  • Successful experience in leading adult learning through professional development trainings.
  • Deep experience in the design, integration, implementation, and management of an instructional model, including knowledge of curricula, instructional practices, school operations and management, and talent development.
  • Ability to analyze and use data on a regular basis to drive decision making.

Nice To Haves

  • 4+ years of work experience as a high-performing school principal and/or manager of school principals, who has experience closing the student achievement gaps between racial, ethnic and economic groups.
  • Multiple years of successful experience in coaching leaders and growing leaders into principals.
  • Successful experience in leading adult learning through professional development trainings.
  • Deep experience in the design, integration, implementation, and management of an instructional model, including knowledge of curricula, instructional practices, school operations and management, and talent development.
  • Bachelor's Degree or higher

Responsibilities

  • Plan and execute coaching and management of School Leaders aligned with our regional priorities through: Frequent/daily travel to schools to be on site at schools Regular observation & feedback of School Leader Leadership team observations & feedback Regular one-on-one meetings with School Leader aligned to a Learning and Development plan Classroom observations and walkthroughs with School Leader and Leadership Team Weekly, bi-weekly, monthly & quarterly progress monitoring with School Leader and Leadership Team Strong performance management Strong leadership modeling for school leader and leadership team
  • Support School Leaders through the planning and budgeting process Ensure rigorous enrollment targets are set and met Support with staffing decisions Hold school leaders accountable to financial sustainability and fiscal responsibility
  • Coach School Leaders on adaptive & technical challenges including: Leading with an equity lens Data-driven instruction Change management Initial employee relations issues (e.g. absenteeism) Parent concerns Escalated student issues Courageous conversations
  • Provide talent leadership to schools Build robust leadership pipelines at schools that include an emergency and named successor leader and pathways from teacher to teacher leader to content specialist to assistant principal to School Leader Ensure School Leaders are fully hired with the highest quality staff available Provide first line approval of organization structure for schools Calibrate on performance of new hires and existing staff Ensure adherence to regional hiring process Provide support on improvement plans and monitor progress
  • Act as a liaison between schools and the Regional Support Office Actively develop leadership Execute on our regional performance management systems with School Leader Engage in regional talent reviews and talent sharing Participate in leader endorsement and selection events Provide substitute and/or interim leadership coverage for School Leaders as required Provide input and feedback to and from RSO teams Participate in annual planning/prioritization process Provide strategic and proactive input to select RSO teams Support change management support around key initiatives Serve on working groups and leadership planning retreats as needed Participate in KIPP NorCal professional community Attend weekly 1:1s with the Deputy Chief Schools Officer Attend weekly Lead Learning Team meetings Attend and lead portions of the School Leader and/or Assistant Principal Community of Practice meetings Perform other duties as assigned by the Chief Schools Officer
