About The Position

Oversee the planning and implementation of a districtwide comprehensive guidance and counseling program; support the implementation of evidence-based programs for the development of the Whole Child; partner in the School Health Advisory Council, state-mandated trainings, and all relevant staff development. Evaluate the development, implementation, and support of comprehensive programs related to School Counseling, Whole Child, Mentoring, and related supports to all campuses. Coordinate with all district-level departments to ensure hiring, professional development, and communication that supports counselors and principals in implementing these programs, and to provide personnel with the necessary resources to support evidence-based practices.

Requirements

  • Master’s degree in Education
  • Valid Texas school counselor certificate
  • Valid Licensed Professional Counseling (LPC) certificate
  • Knowledge of national and state counseling models to develop, support, and sustain a comprehensive school counseling program
  • Knowledge of counseling procedures, student appraisal, and career development
  • Ability to organize and coordinate districtwide programs
  • Excellent organizational, communication, and interpersonal skills
  • Ability to collaborate with others
  • Ability to present information in one-on-one, small group, and large group situations to students, parents, and District staff
  • Sound knowledge and theoretical foundation of the Whole Child Model as defined by the Association for Supervision and Curriculum Development (ASCD) and the Olweus program and how to effectively implement, evaluate, and promote it districtwide
  • Ability to manage budget and personnel
  • Ability to implement evidence-based crisis responses with District and campus leadership that align with national organizations and relevant research
  • Minimum two years of experience teaching
  • Minimum five years of school counseling experience

Responsibilities

  • Oversee the development and implementation of a comprehensive guidance and counseling program as defined by the national and state counseling program that is consistent with District goals and objectives and includes guidance curriculum and responsive services for students.
  • Ensure that individual students and their parents are provided the resources and guidance to plan, monitor, and manage the student’s educational and career development including the creation and review of personal graduation plans and information about post-secondary opportunities.
  • Develop a guidance curriculum that enables school counselors to deliver structured group lessons effectively in accordance with students’ developmental needs.
  • Support the development of evidence-based curriculum and deliver state-mandated trainings and character education programs.
  • Coordinate with staff from all levels of campus leadership and relevant departments regarding the development and implementation of PreK-12 social-emotional curriculum.
  • Advocate for a school environment that acknowledges and respects diversity.
  • Coordinate and assess school, home, and community resources to facilitate referrals for students, parents, and others to appropriate programs and services as needed.
  • Develop an emergency plan and coordinate the activation and assignment of crisis counselors as needed.
  • Comply with policies established by federal and state law, State Board of Education rules, and Board policy.
  • Recommend changes to District policies and develop and update procedures and guidelines related to counseling programs and services when needed and after each legislative session.
  • Adhere to legal, ethical, and professional standards for school counselors including current professional standards of competence and practice as defined by national and state organizations.
  • Create digitized records for the tracking of mental health supports and protocols that include but are not limited to hospitalization, interim learning, self-harm of staff and students, and tiered counseling supports.
  • Develop and administer the Counseling Department budget based on documented needs and ensure that programs are cost-effective and funds are managed wisely.
  • Ensure the training of all District staff in the areas of state-mandated trainings and best practices as they related to trauma, restorative practices, and the development of the Whole Child.
  • Provide training to campus and District leadership on organizational leadership, team building, and leading team communication.
  • Participate in the recruitment, selection, training, and evaluation of school counselors and make recommendations relative to personnel placement, assignment, retention, discipline, and dismissal.
  • Develop and deliver training for all counseling staff and coordinators to promote professional growth, uphold ethical standards, and ensure consistent interpretation of District policies, as well as state laws and regulations.
  • Coordinate the recruitment, selection, and training of all coordinators and Counseling Department staff who serve in the capacity of student intervention, campus support, and District training that supports tiered counseling supports and the implementation of a comprehensive counseling program.
  • Create an environment of collaboration and trust with the campuses and other departments within the District.
  • Establish and maintain open communication.
  • Maintain a professional relationship with colleagues, students, parents, and community members.
  • Use proactive and positive communication skills to present information accurately and clearly.
  • Participate in staff development activities to improve job-related skills.
  • Keep informed of and comply with state, District, and school regulations and policies.
  • Supervise and evaluate the work of counseling staff located in the central office.
