Position Summary The Managing Director (MD), Design & Build is a senior operating leader responsible for the performance, financial results, and client satisfaction of the Design & Build division. Managing Directors report directly to the President, reflecting the strategic importance of the role and positioning MDs closer to decision-making, clients, and enterprise priorities. The MD serves as the senior owner of execution, ensuring operational excellence, financial discipline, construction project management and consistent delivery aligned with Franklin’s standards and client expectations. While the MD maintains strong client relationships and a growth mindset, the role is primarily focused on coordination among sales, engineering, construction and O&M of our own assets.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree required; advanced degree preferred.
  • 7 - 10+ years of experience in solar and energy efficiency project delivery.
  • Demonstrated experience managing multi-million-dollar programs or portfolios with P&L responsibility.
  • Proven ability to lead and develop teams in multi-client environments.
  • Strong financial acumen, including forecasting and performance management.
  • Construction project oversight
  • Strong client relationship and stakeholder management skills.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Data-driven, analytical decision-making capability.
  • Ability to lead through ambiguity and change.
  • Action-oriented, decisive leadership style with strong follow-through.

Responsibilities

  • Serve as the primary point of accountability for client satisfaction, delivery outcomes, and issue resolution.
  • Proactively surface risks, opportunities, and performance issues and lead timely resolution.
  • Support strategic client discussions in partnership with and executive leadership, as appropriate.
  • Own portfolio-level performance against contractual KPIs, budgets, savings targets, and operating plans.
  • Maintain accountability for financial results, including revenue and margin performance.
  • Lead disciplined financial forecasting, variance analysis, and corrective action planning.
  • Ensure contract compliance, scope adherence, and strong financial controls across projects.
  • Own accurate, driver-based forecasts for assigned portfolios.
  • Establish and monitor leading operational and financial indicators, including: Enrollment and sales pipeline health, Conversion rates and production velocity, Staffing levels, labor productivity, and capacity utilization
  • Maintain strong forecast hygiene, clear variance explanations.
  • Ensure all projects meet or exceed contractual, regulatory, safety, and performance requirements.
  • Apply Franklin’s Performance Excellence and management operating system to drive consistency and scalability.
  • Diagnose operational challenges and ensure issues are solved at the appropriate level.
  • Identify trends, risks, and opportunities to optimize delivery and improve results.
  • Ensure compliance with company policies, safety standards, and regulatory requirements.
  • Lead, coach, and develop teams.
  • Set clear expectations for accountability, performance, and professional development.
  • Conduct regular performance reviews, and talent assessments.
  • Partner with HR on workforce planning, engagement, and succession development.
  • Foster a culture of trust, inclusion, ownership, and continuous improvement.
  • Maintain a growth mindset and actively identify opportunities to expand scope and impact within existing client portfolios.
  • Lead or support program renewals, rebids, and scope expansions in partnership with Business Development and subject matter experts.
  • Contribute to proposal development, pricing inputs, and client presentations for expansions and rebids.
  • Support startup and stabilization of new programs within the portfolio.
  • Act as a senior leader within Franklin Energy, modeling strong judgment, collaboration, and accountability.
  • Provide operational insight, market feedback, and performance data to inform enterprise decisions.
  • Demonstrate readiness for broader leadership responsibility as part of Franklin’s leadership pipeline.
