Job Description Overview The Manager - Veterinary Services provides management-level oversight of veterinary support functions for Dallas Animal Services (DAS), including shelter-based medical operations, foster and off-site medical support, patient flow, and medical data coordination. This position reports to the department’s medical leadership through efficient, compliant, and scalable operational workflows. Primary medical authority and clinical decision-making remain with veterinary leadership.

Requirements

High School Diploma or GED.
Five (5) years of experience in small animal veterinary services, shelter medicine.
Two (2) years in a supervisory or lead capacity.
Associate’s degree in Applied Sciences, Veterinary Technology, plus three (3) years of experience in small animal veterinary services, or shelter medicine.
Valid driver's license with good driving record.
Euthanasia Certification or be able to obtain within 120 days.
No animal cruelty convictions.
Ability to work varying shifts, including nights, weekends, and holidays.
Subject to extensive walking, bending, and inclement weather conditions.
Knowledge of shelter medicine operations, including intake triage, population health, disease monitoring, and treatment workflows under veterinary direction.
Understanding of common shelter diseases, vaccination protocols, diagnostics, and treatments to support coordination and execution.
Familiarity with infection control, isolation, and biosecurity practices in animal care environments.
Knowledge of local, state, and federal regulations governing animal welfare, shelter operations, veterinary support, and recordkeeping.
Ability to convert veterinary guidance into operational procedures, staffing plans, and efficient workflows.
Skilled in triaging and escalating animal medical needs using approved protocols when veterinarians are unavailable.
Experience supervising technical and support staff to ensure compliance with medical and operational standards.
Proficient in medical data systems, treatment tracking, reporting, and documentation for compliance and decision-making.
Strong leadership, coaching, and performance management in high-volume, regulated environments.
Excellent written and verbal communication for conveying technical information to veterinarians, staff, leadership, and the public.
Strong organizational, analytical, and time management skills.

Nice To Haves

Certified Veterinary Assistant or Licensed Veterinary Technician preferred.
Fear Free Certification/Training preferred.

Responsibilities

Provides leadership and oversight of veterinary support staff and supervisors across shelter, foster, and off-site medical operations; establishes expectations, assigns responsibilities, and ensures accountability for performance and service quality.
Oversees daily veterinary support operations to ensure alignment with veterinarian & medical leadership guidance, approved treatment protocols, and population health strategies.
Coordinates animal admissions into veterinary care and manages patient flow, diagnostics support, and treatment execution under the veterinarian's direction.
Supports department medical leadership in implementing veterinarian-directed medical policies, procedures, and standards of care; assists with evaluation and monitoring, but does not serve as the primary authority for medical policy development.
Serves as an operational liaison between veterinarians and veterinary support staff to ensure clinical direction is consistently executed across shelter, foster, and off-site environments.
Assists with coordination and execution of infection control, isolation, outbreak response, and biosecurity procedures as directed by veterinary leadership.
Plans, implements, and evaluates operational policies, procedures, staffing models, and workflows to improve efficiency, accuracy, and compliance in veterinary support services.
Oversees medical equipment operations, including inventory management, maintenance coordination, replacement recommendations, and appropriate use.
Assists in the development, preparation, monitoring, and implementation of veterinary support operations budgets; identifies resource needs and provides recommendations to department leadership.
May respond to public inquiries related to animal medical concerns; partners with community stakeholders to resolve issues, de-escalate concerns, and strengthen public trust.
