This role is part of the Lunar Permanence business unit, which develops Blue Origin’s Blue Moon landers and related products. To further Blue Origin's mission of millions of people living and working in space for the benefit of Earth, we are building sustainable infrastructure for our transport of crew and cargo from Earth to the lunar surface. In this position, you will work directly with NASA as part of the Human Landing System (HLS) program. You will play a key role in developing the systems that will return humans to the Moon and extend human presence permanently beyond the bounds of Earth! We are looking for someone to apply their technical expertise, leadership skills, and dedication to quality to build the road to space. Passion for our mission and vision is required! This opportunity is for a Thermal Design and Analysis Manager within the Thermal Product Team of the Lunar Transportation business unit. This person will lead a team responsibly for system engineering, system-level Thermal Analysis, hardware design, and passive thermal hardware delivery. 20-30% of your time will be dedicated to personnel/team management (hiring, performance reviews, mentoring, etc.) while the other 70-80% will be leading and managing the scope of your team as the responsible authority.

Requirements

  • Expert level understanding of heat transfer fundamentals in space environment.
  • Strong understanding of common spacecraft thermal hardware
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills.
  • Minimum of a B.S. degree in Mechanical or Aerospace engineering or similar

Nice To Haves

  • M.S. degree in mechanical or aerospace engineering
  • 2+ years managing technical teams and/or leading functional groups with responsibility for leading and coaching employees.
  • 8+ years of experience in thermal design and analysis for spacecraft systems
  • Knowledge of systems engineering practices, integration processes, design for manufacturing, and quality control
  • Strong understanding of subsystems and their thermal implications across the mission lifecycle.
  • Solid understanding of pumped fluid loops working in tandem with passive thermal solutions
  • Expertise in passive thermal control hardware, with a proven track record of flight hardware delivery
  • Experience evaluating make/buy decisions
  • Experience with verification and validation of Thermal requirements including verification activities, methods and plans.
  • Familiar with agile project management.
  • Familiar with thermal environments of lunar missions.
  • Experience in safety-critical aerospace vehicle certification processes.
  • Experience managing subcontracts.

Responsibilities

  • Responsible for leading the Thermal Design and Analysis team.
  • Perform personnel management including performance reviews, training, etc.
  • Manage your direct reports’ professional development (e.g., coaching, routine one-on-one development conversations, performance reviews, and promotion management)
  • Own the delivery and quality of the overall system design as well as delivery of the passive hardware solutions.
  • Monitor technical progress, requirements, budget, schedule, deliverables and risks as well as review recommendations for change with program management.
  • Deliver a System Thermal design and predict spacecraft temperatures across all mission phases
  • Identify non-compliances to thermal requirements and drive them to resolution
  • Perform trade studies and optimizations of thermal design solutions and collaborate with external subsystems on the trade offs
  • Document thermal design and analysis results and present at program gated reviews
  • Communicate progress to leadership team via; program management reviews weekly/monthly, finance reviews, long term forecasting business plan, and project deep dives.
