About The Position

The Manager of Sterile Processing is responsible for planning, managing, and evaluating the daily operations of Sterile Processing Departments and all facets of sterile instrument processing and associated functions for St. Joseph Medical Center. The role ensures that all activities are conducted in a cost-effective and efficient manner and are compliant with manufacturer recommendations, professional standards, internal policies/standards/procedures, and applicable regulatory requirements. The work is focused on identifying and ensuring customer/patient satisfaction through timely and effective infection control processes, sterility assurance, and product availability. The incumbent is accountable for minimizing potential risk for infection by monitoring all phases of reprocessing devices and reusable equipment. Responsibilities include overseeing instrument inventory management, ensuring optimum staffing levels, supervising staff, participating in vendor/contract management, and troubleshooting issues escalated to first-level management. The role also involves budget preparation and administration, monitoring expenses, and collaborating with clinical areas to meet patient needs.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in a discipline related to the duties of the position.
  • Graduation from an accredited CS Technician course.
  • Four years of progressively responsible related work experience, preferably in a hospital environment.
  • Minimum of two years in a supervisory or management capacity.
  • Current certification as a Certified Registered Central Service Technician (CRCST) at hire, or within one year of date of hire.
  • Current healthcare provider BLS certification.

Nice To Haves

  • Graduation from a school of nursing from an accredited college or university.
  • Possession of SPD Supervisor or SPD Manager certification.

Responsibilities

  • Manage and evaluate the operations/services of the sterile processing functions to ensure timely and cost-effective activities.
  • Modify work-flow processes and auditing functions to improve performance/productivity and customer service.
  • Document work unit activities, productivity, and quality indicators in accordance with FHS guidelines.
  • Troubleshoot emergent issues and resolve them per established guidelines.
  • Ensure appropriate automated systems are maintained in a timely and accurate manner.
  • Produce reports on key performance indices and significant benchmarking metrics for FHS Leadership.
  • Collaborate with other departments to address and resolve problems, share information, and enhance overall effectiveness.
  • Maintain patient safety by implementing appropriate policies and procedures for cleaning, decontamination, and sterilization of reusable medical devices.
  • Schedule, supervise, and evaluate the work of assigned staff engaged in sterilizing/processing equipment and supplies.
  • Assist in identifying adequate staffing levels for appropriate coverage to meet budgetary and operational objectives.
  • Conduct interviews and make employment decisions in accordance with established guidelines.
  • Orient employees and hold regular staff meetings to keep them informed.
  • Develop and deliver ongoing continuing education programs for employees.
  • Approve timecards and communicate performance standards to evaluate employee performance.
  • Counsel employees and provide constructive feedback.
  • Participate in performance management activities and resolve technical issues referred by subordinates.
  • Interpret and ensure compliance with applicable internal/external legal and regulatory agreements.
  • Monitor and assess current operations/services to identify opportunities for performance/process improvements.
  • Serve on teams engaged in the development and updating of policies, procedures, workflows, and action plans.
  • Participate in annual budget planning and administration relative to assigned responsibilities.
  • Monitor work schedules to control overtime and premium pay.
  • Participate in short- and long-term planning activities to support business objectives.
