About The Position

Mastercard’s Graphite team, within the Business & Market Insights Platform Engineering (BMIPE) organization, is seeking a Manager Software Engineering passionate about developing talent and delivering scalable, high-quality frontend solutions across multiple teams and business lines. The team’s core product is a design system that accelerates development and time-to-market by providing accessible, reusable, and flexible UI components. In this role, you will operate as both a people leader (approximately 70%) and a hands-on technical leader (approximately 30%). You will mentor and grow engineers while actively contributing to architecture, code quality, and delivery. As a multiplier for the team, you will help drive technical excellence, anticipate challenges, and collaborate cross-functionally to deliver against sprint goals and long-term roadmap priorities. The Graphite team focuses on building and evolving a comprehensive full-stack design system that enables teams across Mastercard to deliver modern, accessible, scalable, and high-performance front-end experiences. Our goal is to empower product teams to build consistent user interfaces quickly by providing reusable components, tooling, and clear development This is a hybrid position based in Arlington, VA, requiring three days per week onsite.

Requirements

  • Proven experience as a Software Engineer with prior people management experience, including leading, mentoring, and developing engineering teams in a fast-paced environment.
  • Demonstrated success managing performance, providing feedback, and supporting career growth for direct reports.
  • Strong full-stack foundation with deep expertise in modern frontend development, particularly JavaScript/TypeScript and React.
  • Passion for both writing high-quality code and building high-performing teams.
  • Strong knowledge of modern frontend frameworks (e.g., React, Angular) and core web technologies.
  • Experience with frontend tools and ecosystems such as TypeScript, CSS, npm, Storybook, and Figma.
  • Familiarity with testing frameworks (e.g., Jest, Playwright, Cypress).
  • Understanding of accessibility standards (e.g., WCAG, ARIA) and inclusive design principles.
  • Excellent communication skills, with the ability to convey complex ideas clearly to diverse audiences.
  • Bachelor’s degree in a quantitative field such as Engineering, Mathematics, or related experience.

  • Experience with or strong interest in design systems, design tokens, and component-based architectures.

Responsibilities

  • Lead the evolution of a scalable, themeable, and resilient design system, ensuring alignment across teams and anticipating future needs.
  • Drive the development of reusable, composable, and accessible React components, contributing hands-on when needed.
  • Act as a high-impact individual contributor when required, owning complex initiatives from concept through delivery.
  • Provide technical leadership through code reviews, architectural guidance, and continuous improvement of engineering standards.
  • Partner cross-functionally to gather requirements, clarify dependencies, and enable efficient execution.
  • Shape and communicate a clear technical vision and roadmap, aligned with business goals and industry best practices.
  • Guide engineers through ambiguity, ensuring successful delivery of large-scale initiatives.
  • Mentor and develop team members, fostering a high-performing and collaborative engineering culture.
  • Influence and improve team processes, driving efficiency and operational excellence.
  • Manage and support engineers through regular 1:1s, feedback, performance management, and career development.
