This position provides safety leadership and strategic direction by leading the plant’s safety continuous improvement efforts. As an integral member of the Plant Management Team, this role supports and advises site management regarding the Safety Management System. Responsibilities include formulating a proactive local safety strategy that drives the plant to operate in a sustainable, healthy, and safe manner; participating in the development of a safety vision that includes continual enhancement of established programs and consistent implementation of new programs within a team environment; and contributing to efforts to eliminate, prevent, or reduce safety, health, and medical issues. This position also facilitates the development and maintenance of behaviors, attitudes, and a safety culture that support the goals, behaviors, and actions of Tyson Foods, and acts as a change agent to accelerate best practice sharing within the facility. Additional duties include directing site safety programs; recommending the design and implementation of new programs to minimize company losses due to accidents; measuring program effectiveness; leading compliance with OSHA regulations and the Tyson Foods ergonomic program; inspecting machinery, equipment, and working conditions to ensure OSHA compliance; and maintaining OSHA files and supporting documentation. Other responsibilities include accompanying OSHA inspectors during plant inspections; regularly reviewing plant operations to ensure compliance with all permits, operations, and equipment standards in accordance with state and federal regulations; reporting potential violations and recommending corrective actions; analyzing accident statistics to determine necessary safety improvements; communicating safety policy and procedure changes to management; and ensuring all health and safety policies, procedures, and practices are reviewed annually or as required and implemented in a timely manner. In addition, this position conducts safety inspections and procedural audits in the field, and has the authority and ability to take immediate corrective action when required. The role also involves reviewing safety areas to identify causes and corrective actions, and conducting training in areas such as ergonomics, emergency response, lockout/tagout, hazard communication, and personal protective equipment. The position is responsible for investigating all safety-related incidents, reviewing incident reports, and completing required documentation for insurance carriers, the risk management system, and the corporate safety office.
