ABOUT THE COMPANY: Glen-Gery Corporation is a wholly owned subsidiary of Brickworks Limited. Brickworks Limited (“The Group”) is a large Australian-listed group of companies. The Group employs more than 2,000 FTE employees and operates nationally across Australia, recently acquiring Glen-Gery Corporation to add operations in the USA. Founded in 1890, Glen-Gery Corporation is one of the nation’s largest brick manufacturers and operates eight brick manufacturing facilities. Glen-Gery products are sold nationally through a network of over 500 distributors as well as in Canada. Since entering the USA in 2018, Brickworks have acquired Sioux City Brick, Redland Brick and the distribution business of Southfield Corporation in Illinois and Indiana (Illinois Brick, Indiana Brick). The combined North American business now has more than 900 employees, operates across 40 locations, including 8 brick plants, 26 masonry supply/retail locations and 3 design studios. Functions of the role: The Quarry & Raw Materials manager is responsible for corporate oversight of all Glen-Gery quarries and ensuring appropriate designated minimum reserves for all manufacturing facilities. Oversight includes: Ensuring all quarries and persons involved in quarry operations conform/adhere to mining laws and safety regulations, applicable rules and regulations for all Glen-Gery quarries, mining plans are followed, and mining SOPs are properly implemented and followed. Reserves assurance includes cost-effective acquisition of fireclay, shale sands and pigments in sufficient quantity, quality and consistency to meet the manufacturing requirements for all Glen-Gery plants.

  • Bachelor's degree (B.A.) from four-year college or university preferably in mining engineering, geology or earth science; or one to two years related experience and/or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience
  • Ability to read, analyze, and interpret general business periodicals, professional journals, technical procedures, or governmental regulations
  • Ability to write reports, business correspondence, and procedure manuals.
  • Ability to effectively present information and respond to questions from groups of managers, clients, customers, and the general public
  • Ability to work with mathematical concepts such as probability and statistical inference, and fundamentals of plane and solid geometry and trigonometry
  • Ability to apply concepts such as fractions, percentages, ratios, and proportions to practical situations
  • Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables in situations where only limited standardization exists.
  • Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram, or schedule form.

Responsibilities

  • Assists in proving existing reserves for the quality, consistency, quantity and suitability of the raw materials
  • Prospects for and prove new potential reserves for the quality, consistency, quantity and suitability of the raw materials
  • Obtains and maintains all necessary zoning, planning, engineering and other permissions as required for the current and future operation of existing quarries as well as potential land acquisitions. This includes representing the company at public hearings and meetings with Regulatory Agencies
  • Ensures that all necessary permits and permissions are submitted timely and are kept up to date
  • Assists in calculating quarrying operational costs, and instructs Plant Managers on the most cost-effective extraction method while working with Technical Services staff to provide a product mix that ensures quality production
  • Develop reclamation plans to meet all applicable rules and regulations and to maximize the value of the property after quarrying is complete
  • Tours and inspects quarries to detect and resolve production and equipment maintenance problems and to ensure safety and environmental compliance
  • Ensures adherence to mining laws and safety regulations, applicable rules and regulations for all Glen-Gery quarries
  • Assists QA Manager in ensuring that quality control systems for the testing of all raw materials prior to use are in place and are enforced
  • Coordinates with the plants and negotiates with vendors engaged in the supply of fireclays, shales, sands and pigments in order to ensure that the cost-effective supply of these raw materials are in sufficient quality, quantity and consistency to meet the manufacturing requirements of the plants
  • Supervises the testing of various raw materials submitted to the corporate laboratory
  • Provides advice and assistance to plants regarding material suitability and testing programs
  • Assist in new product development including the evaluation of pigments and additives to modify brick color, and other physical products
  • Assist in the resolution of product quality problems as they relate to raw materials and their performance in the manufacturing process
  • Carry out all supervisory responsibilities in accordance with the organizations policies and applicable laws
  • Create an atmosphere in areas of responsibility that continually support the plant daily fundamentals
  • Works in a peer relationship with Glen-Gery plant managers, quarry supervisors, and corporate technical staff.
  • Is responsible for the overall direction, coordination, and evaluation of Glen-Gery quarries.
  • Carrying out supervisory responsibilities in accordance with the organization's policies and applicable laws.
  • Responsibilities include interviewing, hiring, and training employees; planning, assigning, and directing work; appraising performance; rewarding and disciplining employees; addressing complaints and resolving problems.
