About The Position

This position is responsible for planning, directing, and coordinating all agronomical and maintenance operations for the City’s six 18-hole golf courses. This position ensures high-quality playing conditions, environmental stewardship, and operational efficiency through effective leadership, strategic planning, and resource management. This is accomplished by the strategic use of annual budget guidelines, equipment maintenance and replacement, and the use of pesticides and fertilizers in accordance with the state and federal regulations. Position oversees fleet and equipment maintenance operations, and the irrigation repair work and system expansions necessary for all six courses. Manages and oversees five direct reports, (1) Senior Greens Superintendent and (4) Greens Superintendents.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Turfgrass Science/Management or other Nature Science related field.
  • Five (5) years of experience in turfgrass management, equipment operation, irrigation systems, and pest and disease management.
  • Five (5) years of supervisory experience is required - this experience may be included in the required experience listed above.
  • Valid Pesticide Applicator’s license required.
  • Texas Class C driver’s license required.
  • Certified Professional Turfgrass required
  • Manager’s certification through the Texas Turfgrass Association or similar certification from another state organization
  • Knowledge of USGA professional standards and rules.
  • Project management skills.
  • Budget management and general accounting and purchasing skills.
  • Establishing and maintaining effective relationships.
  • Ability to communicate effectively both orally and in writing.

Responsibilities

  • Oversee and guide the work of Green Superintendents and their teams to ensure all golf courses provide optimum playing conditions and exceptional turf quality.
  • Develop, implement, and monitor maintenance, equipment, and operational plans that align with revenue, performance, and environmental sustainability goals.
  • Lead, train, motivate, and evaluate Green Superintendents and their staff to foster high performance, accountability, and professional growth.
  • Establish short-, mid-, and long-term maintenance goals and performance standards; monitor progress and evaluate outcomes to ensure continuous improvement.
  • Provide technical direction and support to course maintenance teams in areas such as turf management, equipment operation, and cultural practices.
  • Oversee irrigation operations, including system audits, repairs, installation, and automated cycle management; ensure staff are properly trained in efficient water use.
  • Plan and manage conservation initiatives such as water and energy reduction programs, Integrated Pest Management, and chemical use reduction strategies.
  • Evaluate and implement special maintenance or renovation projects to enhance playability, aesthetics, and overall course conditions.
  • Monitor daily work quality and ensure timely completion of scheduled maintenance and improvement projects.
  • Coordinate work activities with golf professional staff and other stakeholders to minimize disruption to play and maximize customer satisfaction.
  • Manage relationships with contractors, vendors, consultants, and trades professionals performing work on golf course properties.
  • Attend and participate in staff, budget, and public meetings; prepare reports and documentation as required for operational and environmental compliance.
  • Ensure completion of stormwater management reports and compliance with environmental regulations and City policies.
