About The Position

POSITION SUMMARY: Performs the primary function of a professional nurse leader under the direction of the Director of Surgical Services in assessing, planning, directing, and evaluating nursing care provided to patients and operational flow of the OR. The Manager- RN shall oversee and guide nursing employees that are under their supervision and is responsible for implementing the policies, procedures and philosophy of the hospital. Will also assist with educational activities such as annual competencies, new hire orientation, mock drills, and skills check offs. Responsible for interacting with hospital staff and/or ancillary departments regarding patient care, concerns, and conflicts by identifying and assisting in the resolutions. Responsible and accountable for maintaining performance skills. Will assist with operational throughput, organization of room and staff assignments and aiding in OR case board coordination. May on occasion work weekends, holidays, evenings, nights, and/or on an on-call status. This position summary contains the most relevant duties and responsibilities and does not exclude other assignments not mentioned. The nurse manager will monitor the department financials on a monthly basis and will be directly responsible for the unit productivity while overseeing the timely completion of the daily schedule. Requirements

  • Four (4) years previous RN experience in same or similar unit(s).
  • Nursing supervisory experience required 1 – 3 years with the ability to demonstrate proper communication, problem-solving and planning skills.
  • Willingness to be cross-trained to other unit areas.
  • Clinically competent in operating room nursing
  • Ability to work well as part of a leadership team.
  • Ability to work with all levels of the organization effectively to achieve outcomes, direct others and negotiate for desired results.
  • Knowledge of regulatory compliance standards (CMS, Title 22, TJC, AORN)
  • Effective written and verbal communication skills in the English language.
  • Performs initial assessment appropriate to the patient’s clinical presentation/diagnosis, care setting, age, development level, and cultural and religious orientation in a timely manner as needed.
  • Must demonstrate commitment and adherence to STHS’s Compliance Program and Code of Conduct
  • Through compliance with all policies and procedures, the Code of Conduct, attendance at required training and immediately reporting suspected compliance issue(s) to the Compliance Officer.
  • Registered Nurse currently licensed in the State of Texas, or part of a compact state license, or has a valid temporary RN license for the State of Texas while waiting to receive the permanent license.
  • Must possess an Associate Degree, Baccalaureate Degree or Diploma from a School of Nursing or University.
  • Effective July 1, 2018: Must have a bachelor’s degree in Nursing (or Bachelor’s in related field) on hire or current Managers will be enrolled in a BSN program with degree completion no later than July 1, 2020; internal promotions will enroll into BSN program within 6 months of transition to Manager role.
  • Must have and maintain current certifications, according to unit specific needs. Certification must be in accordance with the curriculum of the AHA, for Healthcare Provider’s Program (for any and all certifications applicable through the AHA program) – please check all that apply:
  • Familiar with basic nursing performance standards as outlined in the TX Nurse Practice Act.
  • BCLS/CPR Must be current upon hire and thereafter
  • ACLS If required in unit, nurse with a year or less of experience - obtain within 12 months of hire; nurse with over a year of experience - obtain within 6 months of hire; or if hired with a current certification must keep current at all times
  • PALS or ENPC If required in unit, nurse with a year or less of experience - obtain within 12 months of hire; nurse with over a year of experience - obtain within 6 months of hire; or if hired with a current certification must keep current at all times

Nice To Haves

  • BSN preferred.
  • Membership in related professional organization preferred.
