About The Position

The Engineering Manager is responsible for designing and implementing common contract logistics processes and driving continuous performance improvement. This engineer will also provide engineering support for new and/or expanding business implementations. The Engineer Manager supports multifaceted operations based on a detailed understanding of client needs. Engineering Managers may contribute to the overall facility layout and design as also determine appropriate equipment to support the concept of operations. These Managers also routinely support the physical implementation of the solution. This role is also responsible for maintaining financial and engineering metrics that will meet or exceed performance goals. The Engineer Manager may have responsibilities of managing Logistics Engineers and/or Interns/Co-ops.

Requirements

  • Minimum 3 years of industrial engineering experience in a supply chain (warehouse/4walls) or similar environment.
  • College Degree required.
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office Applications (Excel, Work, and Power Point)
  • Insight into a Warehouse Management Systems allowing for understanding of system capabilities
  • Knowledge of computer-assisted engineering and design software and equipment like AutoCAD, MS-Project, and Visio
  • English (reading, writing, verbal)
  • Interpersonal communication and language skills (e.g., listening to others, speaking to others, reading, writing).
  • Communication (facilitation skills and very mature communication skills to be able to communicate to all levels in the organization).
  • Strong writing skills with experience documenting design methodologies to create logistics solutions and responses to RFPs
  • Intermediate to advanced Mathematical Skills
  • Strong attention to detail accuracy and accomplishes job task in a timely manner
  • Strong organizational skills and the ability to handle multiple responsibilities simultaneously

Nice To Haves

  • Experience in retail distribution support and/or e-commerce type environment.
  • Knowledge of Simulation software
  • E-commerce experience including starting up small to large volume solutions
  • Experience in multiple warehouse automation applications (Pick to Light, Automated Sortation, Voice Pick, conveyor design, etc.)
  • Experience in LMS implementation and/or steady state execution

Responsibilities

  • Ensures all distribution system functionality is configured to optimize performance (e.g., warehouse management, labor management, slotting, and reporting applications).
  • Establishes work measurement programs and analyzes work samples to develop standards for labor utilization.
  • Analyzes contractual commitments, customer specifications, design changes and other data to drive continuous improvement and meet or exceed expectations of customer.
  • Performs special research or technical studies critical to logistic support functions.
  • Performs cost/benefit tradeoff analysis and develop ROI business cases for recommended projects involving process, system, or technology change.
  • Forecasts facility, vehicle, staffing and/or material handling equipment needs in order to improve cost, utilization, service, and efficiencies.
  • Conducts studies to determine the most efficient sequence of operations and workflow by analyzing production costs, process flow charts, and production schedules.
  • Recommends methods for maximizing the utilization of production facilities and personnel by restructuring job duties, reorganizing workflow, relocating workstations and equipment, and purchasing equipment in adherence with governmental, health, safety, and other regulations.
  • Provides labor planning tool tailored to the client's business and agreed upon operating processes.
  • Identifies and procures all necessary capital expense items to support successful launch of operation.
  • Full understanding of the approved Solutions Model tied to the client's award of business to DSV.
  • Participation in “Advance Quality Planning” sessions with new clients validating requirements and processes.
  • Determines and gains agreement of final design of facility, operating process, equipment type and quantity.
  • Partners with key functional groups that are part of implementation (HR, IT, Operations, etc.) to develop Standard Operating Procedures (SOP's).
  • Develops and provides action items to Project Management that will lead to successful implementation.
  • Document and communicate common processes for all distribution functions within scope of responsibility.
  • Review data and summarize expectations to address gaps in operation.
  • Identify areas for improvement based on analysis of data and observations.
  • Communicate opportunities for improvement in the distribution network.
  • Help determine key metrics and provide recommendations to guide management.
  • Assist with developing/presenting training materials and classes for distribution processes.
  • Bring cross-functional teams together to collaborate on projects.
  • Support the labor management program, including methods and procedures, engineered labor standards, incentive programs and program policies.
  • Ensure alignment among all operations' policies, procedures, and ongoing improvement projects.
  • Facilitate LEAN methodology and recommend solutions to specific business case issues.
  • Understand and apply essential LEAN elements like workflow smoothing, JIT, and Jidoka.
  • Utilize statistical tools such as Pareto Charts, Histograms, Cause & Effect Diagrams.
  • Create a Value Stream Map or Flow Diagram of process to identify critical to quality points.
  • Develop Failure Mode and Effects Analysis (FMEA) of the process being evaluated to quantify impact.
  • Maintain subject matter expertise in proven industry methods and tools such as Six Sigma DMAIC, value-stream mapping, and 5S.
  • Educate team members in LEAN expanding knowledge base to support and develop a sustainable continual improvement culture.
  • Work with leadership to drive continual improvement programs, Kaizen events, and workshops.
  • Set the standard for innovation within strategic and operational problem solving.
  • Apply traditional manufacturing-based concepts to a variety of material handling environments.
  • Ensure that all projects include a sustainability component and drive adherence at multiple levels within the organization utilizing integrated process audits, floor-level dashboards, and management scorecards.
  • Lead all LEAN efforts in an organized manner with steering team deployment and roadmap/critical path development.
  • Illustrate continual improvement successes in a case study before & after format that quantifies value and documents actions taken for future reapplication.
  • Assist with developing and rolling outgrowth strategies and projects.
  • Determine feasibility of projects factoring costs, available space, schedule limitations, company goals, technical requirements, and economic factors.
  • Develop and implement project activities plans and timelines, coordinate subcontractors, facility management and field service personnel, and resolve problems in area of logistics to ensure meeting of contractual commitments.
  • Work overtime as dictated by business whether mandatory or voluntary
