The Manager of Chaplain Services Education at Duke Regional Hospital in Durham, North Carolina, performs managerial, professional, supervisory work directing pastoral services, providing counseling and guidance to patients, families, medical staff, hospital employees and students of all ages, culturally diverse backgrounds, and religious beliefs.

Requirements

  • Graduation from a four-year college or university with a Bachelor of Science or Bachelor of Arts degree.
  • A Masters of Divinity degree from an accredited Seminary or Divinity School.
  • Four quarters of Clinical Pastoral Education.
  • Three years of full-time pastoral experience.
  • Ordination and denominational endorsement and membership in a professional Chaplain's organization.
  • Certification by either the Association of Professional Chaplains (APC) or Certification as a Clinical Pastoral Education Supervisor with the Association of Clinical Pastoral Education (ACPE), Inc.

Nice To Haves

  • ACPE (Association for Clinical Pastoral Education) certification highly preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Maintains continuous and comprehensive assessment of spiritual care needs in all clinical areas.
  • Manages and directs an effective pastoral program.
  • Provides religious counseling and guidance to patients and family members as a part of total patient care.
  • Plans, develops and implements program policies to provide formal and informal religious services for patients, employees, and attending families.
  • Confers with hospital administrative staff and department managers to determine needs for pastoral services.
  • Coordinates pastoral care activities with activities of other departments to avoid interrupting medical care.
  • Visits patients on a social or friendly level and provides counsel and advice on problems or questions of spiritual guidance.
  • Serves as liaison between hospital staff, family and friends of the patients during periods of crisis.
  • Performs church rites at the request of the patient and leads patients in regularly scheduled religious services.
  • Consults with medical staff and nursing staff in total care of the patient.
  • Serves as liaison with pastors, congregations, community agencies, and professional service clubs.
  • Provides in-service education to employees and students.
  • Supervises Chaplains, students and volunteers in the Chaplain's office.
  • Completes performance evaluations and development plans for employees.
  • Reviews department performance in relation to established goals.
  • Promotes development awareness of patient satisfaction scores on spiritual support.
  • Plans and coordinates projects in spiritual care.
