About The Position

Under supervision, is responsible for directing and overseeing the aquatic recreation and safety operations at all beaches and pools throughout the Park District and partnering agencies as agreed upon. Supervises a large staff of aquatic instructors and lifeguards providing aquatic safety and recreation activities. Performs other supervisory, administrative, swimming and safety related duties as required or assigned.

Requirements

  • Graduation from an accredited college or university with a bachelor’s degree in physical education, Recreation or Leisure Studies supplemented by ten years of full-time lifeguard experience including open water safety and rescue experience and aquatic programming experience, including two years in a supervisory capacity, or an equivalent combination of training and experience is required.
  • Candidates must possess the following valid certifications from the American Red Cross or other nationally recognized organization at time of hire: Water Safety Instructor, CPR Instructor, First Aid Instructor, Lifeguard Instructor, Open Water Diving and Basic Power Boating.
  • Common Knowledge of beach and pool design. Knowledge of water safety and rescue methods and techniques. Ability to handle multiple projects on deadline. Ability to effectively present ideas in writing and verbally. Computer skills. Budget preparation and planning skills.

Responsibilities

  • Provides direct oversight for the day-to-day operations of all Park District beach and pool locations.
  • Oversees water safety patrol operations and ensures that safety patrol procedures are responsive to weather and other beach conditions.
  • Ensures that beach land and beach houses are patrolled for safety.
  • Monitors the activities of staff responsible for supervising, teaching, leading and guarding aquatic activities.
  • Reviews and evaluates beach and pool program content. Provides technical direction and assistance in implementing and supervising aquatic program and events.
  • In consultation with CPDU and partnership, plans and conducts seminars and institutes to train and orient Park District employees responsible for supervising, teaching and leading aquatic activities and life guarding.
  • Trains and operates water rescue units including the scuba rescue unit.
  • Conducts training in first aid, CPR and other such courses.
  • Organizes and supervises special aquatic and recreation events which are held on beaches.
  • Collaborates with department and division heads and other supervisors on special projects, providing aquatic staff for triathlons, Venetian Night, Taste of Chicago and other lakefront events.
  • Assures the ordering of special supplies and equipment for aquatic programs and events.
  • Maintains an inventory of special equipment and supplies.
  • Oversees the planning, organizing and conducting of guard tests for lifeguard candidates.
  • Performs administrative duties related to hiring, assigning and evaluating the performance of aquatic personnel.
  • Provides technical assistance and advise on matters involving beach and pool design, special rescue techniques and related activities.
  • Manages unit budget in excess of six million.
  • Develops budget and stays within approved budget.
  • Maintains appropriate records and information related to the units’ finances.
  • Works collaboratively with regions and park staff on program development, staffing and events.
