About The Position

Under general direction of nursing leadership, the Manager RN position is responsible for planning, organizing, and directing of the operations and staff of the respective department. This position has 24-hour responsibility and accountability for planning, directing, coordinating, and evaluating nursing care to ensure optimal patient health outcomes in their respective department. This position links nursing leadership with nursing care through the application of organizational and nursing service policies, procedures, and care delivery model. The Manager RN uses the Code of Ethics for Nurses with Interpretive Statements to guide leadership and practice. The Manager RN attains knowledge and competence reflective of current nursing practice; promotes innovation and futuristic thinking by incorporating evidence based practice and research findings.

Requirements

  • BLS: Basic Life Support (Within 3 months of hire or transfer)
  • ACLS: Advanced Cardiac Life Support (Within 12 months of hire or transfer)
  • RN: Registered Nurse
  • NIMS IS 100: NIMS IS 100 Introduction Incident Command System (Within 6 months of hire or transfer)
  • NIMS IS 700: NIMS IS 700 Introduction National Incident Mgt System (Within 6 months of hire or transfer)
  • NIMS IS 200: NIMS IS 200 Basic Incident Command System Initial Response (Within 6 months of hire or transfer)
  • Bachelor's degree in nursing
  • 4 years’ experience working in a Medical Center or similar setting
  • 2 years’ experience in a Medical Center or similar setting with involvement in supervision, charge nurse, project implementation, professional development program, shared governance leadership role, or equivalent
  • Knowledge of nursing practices and procedures
  • Knowledge of nursing leadership
  • Interpersonal skills needed to communicate successfully with individuals and groups and interact with people at all levels to communicate ideas and concepts in a clear and understandable manner
  • Demonstrate competency in Microsoft® Windows

  • Master’s Degree in clinical or health related field preferred at the time of hire or transfer to position

Responsibilities

  • Directs all patient care activity within the unit, including on-going evaluation, treatment, and discharge planning.
  • Establishes patient care delivery goals and objectives that are consistent with the organization's mission.
  • Provides direct patient care when needed and appropriate.
  • Responsible for hiring, disciplining and discharging employees within the unit according to medical center policy.
  • Responsible for written Job Performance Reviews (JPR's) for all employees within the unit.
  • Determines and maintains the staffing and schedule patterns to provide 24 hour/day, 365 days/year coverage of the unit.
  • Collaborates with physicians, all levels of nursing management and other departmental personnel in planning for coordinated services to the patient.
  • Designs and conducts Process Improvement and Standards of Care for the unit including establishing and writing policies and procedures for the unit.
  • Works with visitors to ensure customer satisfaction, address complaints/concerns in order to meet their individual needs.
  • Plans and prepares the annual operating/capital budget for the unit.
  • Prepares planning proposals, justifications for projects, staffing, capital development and other financial reports as required by the unit.
  • Takes an active role in regular nursing management meetings to influence the direction of nursing service.
  • Actively leads/participates in appropriate meetings.
  • Plans and develops new programs and facility renovation as appropriate.
  • Participates on or leads nursing service committees as appointed by Director of Inpatient Care.
  • Participates on medical staff committees as appropriate.
  • Assures compliance with the Joint Commission, Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) and Michigan Department of Public Health (MDPH) standards.
  • Plans, develops, implements and evaluates educational programs for orientation, staff development, and continued growth of all employees within the department.
  • Counsels staff as needed.
  • Responsible for maintaining lines of communication with peers, subordinates, and superiors.
