Position Overview: State Employees’ Credit Union (SECU) is a financial cooperative with a powerful story to tell – one built on nearly nine decades of serving member-owners, currently over 2.9 million strong – supporting their financial well-being through every stage of life and strengthening communities across North Carolina. This important leadership role will help shape how that story is told. SECU is looking for a strategic marketing communications and editorial leader to elevate, with clarity and consistency, how we tell our story and strengthen our messaging across owned and paid channels. This senior leadership position sits within the communications teams and oversees the organization’s marketing voice and messaging architecture, guides content strategy and development, and leads a team of high-performing marketing communications managers. This ideal candidate is a strategic thinker and storyteller, disciplined marketing strategist, and ace editor that mentors talent and empowers teams to perform at a high level.

Requirements

  • BA/BS degree required; preference for communications, marketing, or related field.
  • Minimum of ten (10) years of marketing, communications, editorial experience, or other related field.
  • Minimum of (5) years leading integrated teams in fast-paced and heavily regulated environments.
  • Experience with marketing project management software (ex: Jira, Workfront, Asana, Monday.com).
  • Strong writing, editing and strategy storytelling skills; mastery of translating strategy into high-Impact messaging across channels.
  • Ability to work with speed with intense attention to accuracy, detail, and consistency.
  • Knowledge of the traditional and non-traditional media landscape to ensure messaging supports the full member journey – from awareness to engagement.
  • Experience and passion for mentoring and coaching high-performing teams.
  • Desire to work in a highly collaborative environment with a passion for mission-driven work grounded in the credit union philosophy of People Helping People ® and working principle of Do the Right Thing.

Responsibilities

  • Guide Brand Voice, Content Strategy, and Editorial Excellence Execute the communications strategy, including setting team priorities and assigning content to the marketing communications team.
  • Lead the development and execution of marketing messaging architecture and brand storytelling across owned and paid channels.
  • Review and edit all marketing communications content to ensure accuracy, clarity, style consistency, and adherence to SECU’s brand voice and tone.
  • Serve as editorial leader for marketing communications, ensuring all marketing output reflects consistent, compelling messaging.
  • Monitor content performance metrics and suggest adjustments required to ensure content produced has intended impact.
  • Lead and Develop a High-Performing Team Mentor and lead a team of marketing communications managers.
  • Foster a culture of collaboration, creativity, accountability, and continuous improvement across departments.
  • Enable teams to do their best work by providing clear direction, removing obstacles, assigning deadlines, and ensuring timely delivery of requested content.
  • Drive Integrated Marketing Communications and Cross-Functional Collaboration Partner with marketing and brand and creative leadership to implement integrated marketing communications strategies that support organizational priorities and marketing initiatives.
  • Translate complex initiatives into clear, compelling marketing messaging across channels.
  • Serve as trusted advisor to internal stakeholders on messaging, building strong relationships with internal stakeholders to align messaging with priorities and member needs.
