About The Position

As a Manager, Legal in our Baytree Headquarters location you'll be responsible for overseeing the intake, review, and appropriate management of legal documentation and correspondence including but not limited to powers of attorney (POAs), deceased member documentation, trusts and estate accounts, levies, garnishments, subpoenas, complaints, and related litigation communications. This role ensures all legal requests and legal papers are processed accurately, in compliance with applicable laws and credit union policies, and routed to the appropriate business areas. The Manager Legal serves as a liaison between internal teams, legal counsel, external agencies, and external counsel to support Space Coast Credit Union's legal and regulatory obligations. The successful candidate will not only manage but will also engage with the legal, operations, and risk management teams to develop and innovate the legal department's legal process structure and procedures. Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree or equivalent professional experience required.
  • Five (5) years to eight (8) years of experience in reviewing legal documentation in a financial, estate, or litigation setting, with one (1) to three (3) years management experience preferred.
  • Familiarity with court systems, legal process serving, document authentication, and legal records management.

  • Law degree or paralegal certification is strongly preferred.
  • In-depth understanding of state and federal regulations impacting account access and legal orders.
  • Preference will be given to candidates with law firm or in-house legal records management experience.

Responsibilities

  • Manages the intake, validation, and routing of legal documents, including but not limited to subpoenas, complaints, powers of attorney (POA), estate and probate documents for deceased members, garnishments, trusts, subpoenas, levies, and guardianship requests.
  • Collaborate with internal departments (e.g., Deposit Operations, Loan Servicing, Loss Prevention, Compliance) to ensure appropriate and timely action on legal requests.
  • Coordinate with risk management team to determine whether to file insurance claims for reimbursement.
  • Serve as the subject matter expert (SME) for account access scenarios (e.g., guardianships, conservatorships, fiduciary accounts).
  • Coordinate with Compliance, Loss Prevention, and BSA teams for red flag escalation and suspicious activity reporting related to legal submissions.
  • Support internal investigations and provide documentation for litigation preparation when needed.
  • Develop and analyze KPIs for legal document handling (e.g., turnaround times, error rates, volume trends, record retention, destruction logs, etc.) and create reports as needed.
  • Maintain and regularly review procedures to ensure compliance with federal and state regulations and update them as laws or internal processes change.
  • Act as a point of contact for legal inquiries from staff, external attorneys, courts, and government agencies.
  • Provide training and guidance to frontline and back-office employees on legal document handling and escalation protocols.
  • Monitor and track legal requests to ensure appropriate documentation, audit trails, and deadlines are met.
  • Escalate complex or high-risk cases to in-house or external legal counsel as needed.
  • Stay abreast of legislative and regulatory changes impacting legal processing in financial institutions.
  • Assist in responding to audits or exams related to legal documentation or member account access issues.
  • Support fraud mitigation efforts by identifying irregularities in submitted legal documents.
  • Participate in special projects as assigned.
