We are comprised of a 49-bed hospital, various medical offices, home health, a birthing center and a vast scope of services located throughout The Dalles and the surrounding areas. Job Summary: Maintains responsibility for overall operation of the clinical laboratory in consultation with and under the direction of Medical Directors (Pathologists) and the Regional Clinical Laboratory Directors. Develops, monitors and provides leadership for the financial, contracting, regulatory, accreditation and client services policies procedures for the clinical/anatomic laboratories. Selects appropriate instrumentation or test methodologies, develops and maintains appropriate Quality Assurance (QA) program, monitors testing and QA processes, including recording and reporting of results. Supervises and directs the activities of various levels of assigned personnel using both professional and supervisory discretion and independent judgment.

  • Manages the day-to-day operations of a unit/department.
  • Maintains first line accountability for outcomes and satisfaction.
  • Facilitates effective organization of staff, equipment, supplies and time.
  • Supervises unit/department through delegation of tasks.
  • Prepares technical reports reflecting volume of work, procedures utilized and test results.
  • Coordinates the preparation of reports and analyses, setting forth progress, adverse trends and appropriate recommendations, or conclusions.
  • Participates in the development of new medical laboratory procedures and techniques.
  • Plans, develops and presents workshops.
  • Ensures program compliance with applicable regulations and safe working environment.
  • Develops and implements quality control programs to ensure reliability of testing procedures, proper function of laboratory equipment and compliance with federal regulations.
  • Provides advanced problem solving, troubleshooting, interpretation/consultation, verification of specimen quality and test results.
  • Recommends and develops quality cost containment programs for laboratory services.
  • Monitors Quality Control, Quality Assurance, Safety and Inspection Control practices to assure compliance with internal/external regulations.
  • Reviews patient and quality control results for shifts and trends, monitoring quality of departmental functions.
  • Manages, coordinates and evaluates all elements of laboratory services in assigned specialties of the Laboratory.
  • Works in conjunction with regional technical specialists.
  • Interprets accrediting agencies standards or guidelines for ancillary testing program and translates requirement into policies and procedures.
  • Provides guidance and oversight to ensure consistency across all the laboratories in hiring practices, compensation, promotions and disciplinary actions.
  • Trains, supervises and schedules the senior laboratory assistants, laboratory assistants/phlebotomists.
  • Assigns staff to patients and patient care activities according to staff skills and patient acuity.
  • Adjusts daily work assignments to meet the demands of the department.
  • Performs evaluations, promotions, salary recommendations, disciplinary action and termination of staff, as required.
  • Oversees financial aspects of the laboratory, including coordinating and preparing the capital and operational budgets.
  • Collaborates closely with the Laboratory Directors and Supervisors on current/future financial challenges.
  • Bachelor's Degree in medical technology, clinical laboratory science, biological sciences, chemical sciences or allied health technologies or equivalent: Required
  • Master's Degree: Preferred
  • Five years' clinical laboratory experience: Preferred
  • One year's leadership experience: Preferred
  • Current certification from American Society for Clinical Pathology (ASCP) or Medical Technologist American Medical Technologists (MT-AMT) certification or equivalent: Required in OR and HI
  • Facility Specific License/Certifications: American Society for Clinical Pathology Certification (ASCP) or American Medical Tech Board MT (MT-AMT): Required
