About The Position

The Manager, Information Governance - eDiscovery & Compliance will play a crucial role in supporting Simpson Thacher & Bartlett’s efforts to manage information governance practices and mitigate risk. This role requires a detail-oriented, proactive individual who will be primarily responsible for supporting the Office of the General Counsel in managing legal hold requests across the eDiscovery lifecycle. The Manager, Information Governance - eDiscovery & Compliance will work closely with the Information Governance team to identify, preserve and collect information subject to legal hold. This position will require collaboration and coordination with Practice Technology, Information Technology, case teams and other internal stakeholders. The Manager, Information Governance - eDiscovery & Compliance will report directly to the Senior Manager, Information Governance – Compliance within the Office of the General Counsel.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree required
  • 5-7 years of hands-on experience in eDiscovery, with a strong understanding of the entire EDRM lifecycle.
  • Prior experience implementing legal holds in Microsoft Purview eDiscovery.
  • Familiarity with other eDiscovery and legal hold software tools (e.g., Relativity, Encase, Exterro).
  • Working knowledge of data collection, data storage, and chain of custody standard methodologies.
  • Strong technical proficiency with an understanding of data formats, metadata, and document management systems.
  • Knowledge of search term analysis and search term reporting.
  • Demonstrated ability to maintain confidential and sensitive data.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Rigorous organizational skills and attention to detail.
  • Ability to prioritize multiple tasks, manage multiple projects, and meet timely deadlines.
  • The ability to confront unexpected problems quickly and effectively.
  • Ability to work independently while using sound judgment, initiative, and discretion.
  • Strong interpersonal skills with proven ability to interact with individuals of all levels.
  • Intermediate to advanced proficiency with MS Word, Excel, Outlook and PowerPoint.

Nice To Haves

  • Previous experience working in a corporate legal department, law firm, or eDiscovery vendor environment is preferred.
  • Industry-specific certifications (e.g., CEDS, Arkfeld) preferred.
  • Technology-specific training and/or certifications (e.g., Exterro, M365 Purview, Relativity, iManage, EnCase) preferred.
  • Experience with document review management is beneficial.

Responsibilities

  • Oversee internal eDiscovery processes, with a focus on preservation efforts.
  • Serve as the primary contact for internal legal hold-related questions.
  • Identify and implement Firm legal holds for relevant custodians and data sources, ensuring that information required for legal holds, regulatory investigations, or other legal matters is preserved and exempted from routine disposition.
  • Manage legal hold processes, ensuring custodians are notified and appropriate actions are taken.
  • Maintain records related to legal holds, including notice issuance, hold release, and other tracking.
  • Support Practice Technology and Information Technology with eDiscovery collection, review and production efforts.
  • Manage and update processes for the Firm’s eDiscovery, legal, compliance, and business requirements.
  • Stay informed about industry best practices and emerging technologies in eDiscovery.
  • Provide expertise across the Electronic Discovery Reference Model (EDRM) lifecycle, including automation of legal hold processes.
  • Assist in developing and delivering training materials and standard operating procedures for eDiscovery and Information Governance.
  • Support wider Information Governance initiatives by implementing and managing policies and procedures and providing recommendations for risk mitigation and compliance improvements.
  • Participate in continuing education, research, networking, and professional organizations to advance competencies.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
