About The Position

The Pathology Department at the University of Miami has an exciting opportunity for a Manager, Histotechnologist . CORE JOB SUMMARY The Manager, Histotechnologist provides leadership and management for clinical laboratory procedures, quality assurance, and instrument maintenance. The Manager, Histotechnologist plans and implements the overall laboratory policies, procedures, and services for the assigned unit. Additionally, an employee in this position ensures efficient and effective departmental operations, including department quality control and compliance adherence. The Manager, Histotechnologist also manages and oversees personnel, coordinates services with reference laboratories and vendors, and collaborates with other laboratories and departments to provide high quality integrated patient care. Further, the incumbent oversees the development of various monthly and quarterly reports and actively improves the functions of the laboratory services.

Responsibilities

  • Manages teams of medical technologists responsible for performing basic tests and laboratory procedures. Communicates and disseminates general information and policy or procedure changes to personnel.
  • Ensures that the proper laboratory equipment is in place. Monitors equipment performance, diagnoses instrument problems and malfunctions, and makes repairs or initiates service requests.
  • Plans, prioritizes, and directs work activities to ensure smooth and efficient operations.
  • Investigates and resolves problems concerning patient testing and procedures.
  • Assists with interviewing and selecting new staff. Participates in the formal progressive disciplinary process. Conducts, monitors, and evaluates the effectiveness of employee performance improvement plans.
  • Participates in the design and implementation of new procedures and instrumentation.
  • Monitors quality control and assurance, proficiency testing, and implements corrective actions.
  • Coordinates and participates in continuing education activities and events.
  • Monitors employee compliance with approved regulatory and departmental guidelines.
  • Assists in developing the strategic goals and objectives for the section.
  • Develops, implements, and evaluates training programs.
  • Assists with the development of competency assessment tools.
  • Participates in the review, revision, and implementation of standard operating procedures.
  • Establishes and continuously assesses the effectiveness of the internal controls within the unit and compliance with University policies and procedures. Ensures employees are trained in controls within the function and on University policy and procedures.
  • Ensures timely processing of tissue specimens, embedding, cutting, staining, and slide preparation to meet technical turnaround times in various anatomic pathology labs.
  • Analyzes data, generates graphs of quality indicators, conducts investigations, and prepares corrective action plans.
  • Assures supervisors plan staffing requirements, hire to meet needs and schedules to ensure efficient management of resources and workflow.
  • Oversees recruitment, training, scheduling, and performance management of histology personnel (histotechnologists, technicians, aides).
  • Works with the laboratory director/supervisor and QA team to incorporate a comprehensive quality and training program that includes SOPs, training records and oversight, and implementation of quality testing programs.
  • Develops, implements, and maintains standard operating procedures (SOPs) in compliance with CAP, CLIA, and other regulatory standards.
  • Oversees preventive maintenance, calibration, and troubleshooting of microtomes, tissue processors, embedding centers, and staining instruments.
  • Establishes and monitors QC measures for stains, reagents, and instrumentation; ensures documentation and corrective actions.
  • Maintains the department ready for inspections and audits; ensures readiness for CAP, CLIA, JCAHO, and other accrediting bodies.
  • Prepare responses to citations and/ or accreditation inquiries.
  • Ensures adherence to laboratory safety protocols, including chemical handling, biohazard disposal, and PPE compliance.
  • Identifies workflow bottlenecks and implements process improvements to maintain turnaround times and quality.
  • Participates actively on ongoing and new performance improvement projects.
  • Assist on investigations, root cause analyses and complaint resolutions.
  • Adheres to all Administration, Environmental of Care, CHP, Safety, Infection Control and Laboratory policies and procedures.
  • Maintains accurate records of specimen logs, workload statistics, and productivity reports; uses LIS (Laboratory Information Systems).
  • Serves as a liaison between histology, pathology, surgical, and research teams to ensure seamless workflow and communication.
  • Other duties assigned.
