About The Position

The Grocery Department Manager is responsible for managing the daily operations of the grocery department, including product ordering, inventory control, merchandising, cleanliness, and customer service. This role requires strong leadership, attention to detail, and the ability to drive sales while maintaining Joseph's Classic Market's standards of quality and presentation.

Requirements

  • Minimum 2-3 years of grocery retail experience, with at least 1 year in a supervisory role
  • Strong knowledge of grocery categories, merchandising, and inventory control
  • Excellent leadership, communication, and organizational skills
  • Proficiency in ordering systems and inventory tools
  • Ability to lift up to 50 lbs and work on feet for extended periods
  • Flexible schedule including early mornings, weekends, and holidays

Responsibilities

  • Oversee all grocery floor operations including dry goods, canned goods, beverages, dairy, frozen, and non-food items
  • Maintain full, clean, and well-organized shelves and backroom storage areas
  • Ensure all shelves, endcaps, and displays are stocked and rotated using FIFO
  • Supervise opening and closing duties for the grocery department
  • Coordinate product movement between storage, backstock, and sales floor
  • Execute all company merchandising plans and planograms
  • Set and maintain attractive and impactful promotional displays
  • Coordinate weekly ad sets, special promotions, and seasonal resets
  • Ensure proper and accurate signage, shelf tags, and pricing
  • Keep high-traffic displays full, clean, and shoppable throughout the day
  • Order products from approved vendors based on par levels and sales trends
  • Monitor and manage inventory to reduce shrink and overstocks
  • Conduct regular inventory counts and reconcile discrepancies
  • Manage backstock areas and organization systems
  • Maintain accurate records of waste and damaged goods
  • Ensure team members are helpful, knowledgeable, and available to assist guests
  • Handle customer concerns and product inquiries in a professional manner
  • Train staff to assist with product location, substitutions, and special orders
  • Create a warm, inviting atmosphere that reflects Joseph's service standards
  • Hire, train, and schedule grocery clerks and stockers
  • Provide ongoing coaching and support to the grocery team
  • Lead daily huddles to review goals, tasks, and promotions
  • Maintain labor budgets and staffing levels to match sales volume
  • Ensure safety standards are followed (e.g., ladder use, heavy lifting, spill response)
  • Submit weekly sales, labor, and shrink reports to Store Manager
  • Communicate vendor or delivery issues to buyers or leadership
  • Coordinate with other department managers on store-wide promotions or inventory needs
  • Maintain accurate logs and checklists for stocking, rotation, and ordering
