About The Position

The Manager, General Accounting, is responsible for the maintenance of the general ledger ensuring accounts are in balance and all controls are maintained. This individual is responsible for directing the workflow of the entire general accounting department team and assisting department employees as needed.

Responsibilities

  • Recommend or implement and administer accounting policies, procedures and standards, and ensure compliance with regulatory requirements.
  • Direct the design, modification, installation and maintenance of general accounting systems and related sub-systems.
  • Manage policy accounting aspects such as application of incoming premium payments and payment exception processing
  • Oversee accounts payable, accounts receivable including policy premium collections, disbursement requests and check printing services provided to other internal departments
  • Recommend enhancements to reporting processes and systems
  • Manage cash and premium controls reviewing bank files and database changes initiated by support staff
  • Administer general ledger balancing and reconciliation
  • Ensure timely and accurate reconciliation of bank accounts and investigation of any unusual, undocumented and/or transactions not recorded on the general ledger.
  • Ensure accurate and timely regulatory filings, including but not limited to, premium and municipal taxes; abandoned property filings; misc. state licenses, fees and assessments.
  • Assist in the quarterly and annual statement reporting process as needed, including preparation and/or review of misc. filings.
  • Manage performance, achievements, merit increases and attendance of department personnel
  • Attend continuing education webinars/seminars to maintain statutory accounting knowledge.
  • Train new and existing employees as needed
  • Promote and maintain quality customer service, cooperation and communication among the department personnel.
  • Maintain open communication with the Manager, Financial Reporting, Vice President Finance/Controller/Treasurer and internal department management.
  • Build positive relationships and maintain excellent communication with all departments in the Home Office, as well as all external customers.
  • In the absence of the Controller, perform any functions required by senior management, including making income tax deposits.
