The position is located at Duke Eye Center at Arringdon - 5601 Arringdon Park Dr, Morrisville, NC. The COM will manage and coordinate ophthalmic medical support staff and ophthalmic clinic service activities to achieve continuous and optimal patient care within the main Eye Center.

Requirements

  • Completion of Ophthalmic Technician and certification as a certified Ophthalmic Technician by Joint Commission on Allied Health Personnel in Ophthalmology (JCAHPO).
  • Minimum of 6 years of ophthalmology clinic technical support related experience, of which 2 years must be in a leadership capacity.
  • Diverse knowledge of patient care and eye problems along with extensive knowledge of ophthalmic anatomy, physiology, and pharmaceuticals.
  • Certification by JCAHPO at one of the following levels: COT or COMT.

Responsibilities

  • Coordinate diagnostic and treatment activities of the clinic with services of other departments to ensure effective patient care and efficient service.
  • Participate in the preparation of department budget. Make budgetary recommendations and projections. Monitor, verify and reconcile expenditures, and develop cost-comparisons. Identify cost savings within the operation.
  • Actively participate on committees to achieve desired outcomes and ensure follow upon action plans (operating processes, policies and procedures, utilization of space, increase revenue, supply utilization, personnel, etc.).
  • Process data for the preparation of composite reports and special projects. Generate, analyze and/or interpret entity-specific reports relating to department performance, staff performance, financial performance, and execute appropriate action plans.
  • Maintain liaison with professional medical staff and other personnel, faculty, and management in administrating policies and procedures regarding patient flow and utilization of space, time, supplies, and equipment. Develop policies and procedures to improve patient care and utilization of clinic resources.
  • Maintain interface with physicians, patients and administrative staff to provide information and to resolve problems relating to clinic services.
  • Plan and schedule work for medical support staff ensuring proper distribution for all services, space and facilities for subsequent performance of duties. Plan and provide a weekly staff schedule and revise as needed. Approve leave and vacation time for staff, while being mindful of schedules and clinic flow.
  • Orient and train new medical support staff. Monitor staff training and daily hands-on instruction. Enforces regulatory and compliance requirements (HIPAA, JCAHO, etc.).
  • Communicate and model the values of DUHS through orientation, development, mentoring, performance counseling and evaluation of staff. Plan and implement strategies to promote effective recruitment, retention and development of diverse work teams.
  • Directly responsible for all personnel action including, but not limited to, hiring, performance, appraisals, promotions, vacation schedules, and maintaining payroll records and time reports. Maintain current employee JCAHO files for accuracy.
