About The Position

The Manager, External Engagement is responsible for supporting the development and execution of a coordinated approach to engaging external partners across the Greater Boston area. This role serves as a key liaison between the Cambridge Site Leadership Team and external organizations, including academic institutions, non-profit organizations, biotech incubators, entrepreneurs, and industry partners. The position supports scientific collaboration, community engagement, early career development, and site visibility initiatives that align with broader site and enterprise strategies. This role works cross-functionally with Government Affairs, University Relations, HR, and other internal stakeholders, supports the management of outreach-related budgets, and coordinates planning and execution of key site- and enterprise-level events. The position plays an important role in maintaining visibility, continuity, and impact across all external engagement activities for the Cambridge site. This role follows our hybrid working model, requiring an on-site presence of 50%. This role will report to the Senior Director, Strategy and Research Operations, while working closely with the Cambridge Site Leadership Team.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree required. Degree in communications, public affairs, life sciences, or a related field preferred.
  • 5+ years of experience in external relations, partnerships, community engagement, communications, or a related role.
  • Demonstrated experience managing external partnerships with academic institutions, non-profit organizations, or industry collaborators.
  • Experience coordinating cross-functional initiatives and working with Corporate Affairs, Government Affairs, University Relations, HR, or similar stakeholder groups.
  • Proven ability to plan and execute events, programs, or initiatives involving multiple internal and external partners.
  • Experience managing and tracking budgets, including forecasting and reporting
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to represent the organization professionally to external audiences.
  • Strong organizational and project management skills, with the ability to manage multiple priorities simultaneously.

Responsibilities

  • Collaborates to the development of execution strategic, coordinates external outreach and partner engagement strategy for the Greater Boston area, ensuring alignment with Cambridge site priorities and enterprise objectives
  • Manage and maintain relationships with external partners, including academic institutions, non-profit organizations, biotech incubators, life science entrepreneurs, and corporate collaborators.
  • Serve as a primary point of contact for site-level external engagement initiatives and support coordination across internal stakeholders.
  • Support scientific engagement initiatives through the local Science Council, including programs such as the Golden Ticket with LabCentral and other projects that advance collaboration and innovation.
  • Serve as site lead for the BMS STEM Council Community team, supporting STEM education, early career development, and related outreach initiatives.
  • Partner with University Relations and HR to support early talent initiatives, including internships and co-op programs, and coordinate early career engagement opportunities that provide a positive, meaningful experience for students.
  • Partner closely with Corporate Affairs and Government Affairs to support alignment on messaging, planning, and execution of community and legislative engagement activities.
  • Partner with the site communications lead to support internal communications to increase awareness of external engagement opportunities and site outreach activities.
  • Support philanthropic initiatives and community partnerships that align with site and enterprise priorities.
  • Plan, coordinate, and execute site-hosted and externally facing events that enhance site visibility and strengthen external relationships.
  • Manage and track outreach-related budgets, ensuring alignment with site priorities and appropriate oversight.
  • Ensure consistent communication, documentation, and continuity across all external outreach programs and partnerships.
