Provides leadership and direction at the site level, driving the execution of local and corporate EHS business plans. Responsible for overall EHS performance at a sophisticated development and production site, ensuring compliance with regulations and safeguarding employees and surrounding communities. Develops, implements, and leads all aspects of environmental, health, and safety programs to align with corporate and regulatory requirements.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in environmental, safety, chemical engineering or related discipline.
  • 10 years of relevant experience.
  • Pharma/cGMP knowledge preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Adapts departmental plans and priorities to address resource and operational challenges in a fast-paced environment.
  • Continuously develops and improves Lonza's EHS Management System, including organization, standards, audits, performance reporting, and stakeholder communication.
  • Leads project teams of EHS professionals and functional specialists in complex site and multi-site initiatives.
  • Ensures site management adheres to corporate EHS guidelines and local regulatory requirements.
  • Measures site-level EHS performance and sets goals for continuous improvement in safety, emissions reduction, waste recycling, and training programs.
  • Researches, evaluates, and recommends technological, equipment, and process improvements to improve EHS performance.
  • Anticipates regulatory and business challenges, providing strategic solutions to mitigate risks.
  • Represents Lonza in professional and industry organizations to cultivate knowledge exchange and standard processes.
  • Plans and coordinates remediation projects, ensuring compliance with government regulations for hazardous waste management and site cleanup.
  • Ensures security policies and procedures align with government regulations and country-specific compliance standards.
  • Promotes a culture of safety and sustainability, promptly addressing and correcting any identified deficiencies, incidents, or opportunities for improvement.
  • Coordinates hazardous waste operations in compliance with RCRA (40 CFR 255.16) and DOT (49 CFR 172.202) requirements.
  • Conducts job safety analyses and risk assessments.
  • Conducts and analyzes industrial hygiene surveys and sampling to identify and evaluate airborne pharmaceuticals and other hazards.
  • Promptly reports and takes actions related to identified Safety and Sustainability issues, problems, deficiencies, errors, incidents, and/or opportunities to management and correct where possible.
  • Conducts and documents incidents investigations using structured problem-solving techniques including identification of root-cause and effective preventative actions.
  • Conducts EHS training for new employees, temporaries, and contractors.
  • Evaluates new projects or products to provide guidance to comply with EHS&S requirements.
  • Assists with updating procedure, processes, equipment, and facilities on new or revised regulations.
  • Supports and builds a culture of safety through employee engagement and participation.
  • Reviews process safety information, assesses hazards and recommends approaches that reduce employee's exposure to work hazards.
  • Performs and/or assists in conducting risk assessments to evaluate the proper handling of chemicals and materials.
  • Manages multiple projects with well-documented and organized project management skills to problem solve and support company objectives.
  • Leads focused initiatives to improve safety.
  • Performs industrial hygiene sampling for various potential hazards including noise, organic solvents, and/or active pharmaceutical ingredients.
  • Recommends corrective actions where appropriate and follows up to verify completion of corrective actions.
  • Conducts assessments and classification of new chemicals.
  • Updates procedures and conducts training as required.
  • Provides technical support on EHS matters and site projects including regulatory interpretation.
  • Coordinates the notification of appropriate emergency personnel.
  • Assists in managing emergency personnel upon their arrival.
  • Conducts security risk assessments and audits; coordinates corrective actions for identified security exposures.
  • Develops and tracks metrics to gauge effectiveness of EHS programs.
