About The Position

For more than eight decades, LECO has advanced laboratory science with innovative instruments used across the globe. As the Manager, Electrical Systems R&D and Architecture, you will guide the strategy and day-to-day execution of LECO’s Electrical Engineering team supporting multiple product lines. You will collaborate with product leaders and peer managers to prioritize work, allocate resources, and ensure high-quality delivery for concurrent development efforts. This position reports to the Vice-President, Research & Development. On-site in St. Joseph, MI Monday–Friday, 8:00 a.m.–5:00 p.m. You start the morning aligning priorities for a team of up to 10 electrical engineers. You assess capacity, assign resources to several active programs, and remove roadblocks. Midday brings a cross-functional review to refine system architecture that spans mechanical, firmware, and software disciplines. In the afternoon, you meet with team members for coaching and performance discussions, review procedures and product plans, and close the day by ensuring quality standards and timelines are on track across every project.

Requirements

  • High technical aptitude with strong interpersonal skills and emotional intelligence
  • Exceptional system design skills with cross-functional awareness (Mechanical, Firmware, Software, etc.)
  • Broad familiarity across Electrical Engineering topics, including: Mixed Signal Design (ADC/DAC) and Measurement Systems Microcontroller and Digital design Analog design Closed-loop temperature control systems AC design (single phase and three phase) High voltage design (1 kV and above, typically low power) Motor control HMI (human-machine interface) design System design PWB/PCB and PWA experience Wire harness design
  • Clear, concise communication skills
  • Strong coordination and facilitation capabilities with sensitivity to stakeholder needs
  • Adaptive leadership style suited to a variety of personalities and working styles
  • B.S. in Electrical Engineering and at least 8 years of experience in a product development environment

Responsibilities

  • Management responsibility for a functional group of up to 10 team members
  • Proactive problem anticipation, identification, and resolution
  • Capacity assessment and resource assignment across multiple concurrent product development efforts
  • Participation in hiring and, when necessary, termination processes
  • Contribution to R&D strategic planning
  • Execution or participation in special studies to inform decisions
  • Creation and maintenance of job descriptions and job description review records
  • Development and upkeep of procedures for the functional group
  • Ownership of product plans, strategy, and direction for the electrical function
  • Regular, scheduled group meetings
  • Recurring, scheduled performance appraisals for team members
  • Assurance of project work quality, timeliness, and effectiveness
  • Planning and delivery of training to grow the team’s professional capabilities
  • Upholding company policies as outlined in the LECO Employee Manual
  • Promotion of a collaborative team environment within the department and across the corporation
  • Advocacy for and adherence to the LECO Quality Plan
  • Support of the functional needs of other departments
