Our Supply, Trading and Optimization (ST&O) group represents Suncor in global energy commodity markets and continues to expand its crude, refined products, natural gas, power, environmental products, and freight trading platform. We are seeking a Manager Commodity Risk with deep commercial commodity and freight risk management experience to join our global Middle Office Risk leadership team, based in Houston, TX. This role provides functional leadership, governance ownership, and strategic risk oversight across international commodity and freight trading activities. As Manager Commodity Risk, you will be accountable for the end‑to‑end product and market risk oversight framework supporting Suncor’s global trading activities, including physical and derivative crude and refined products and freight trading. Requirements

  • 10+ years’ experience in commodity trading (Front, Middle, or Back Office), with strong exposure to marine activity and freight trading
  • University Degree, preferably Business, Economics, Finance, Accounting, Mathematics or Computer Science
  • Strong understanding of commodity risk management across derivatives, physical crude, freight and refined products, including trading lifecycle and risk metrics (VaR, stop loss, stress testing)
  • Solid understanding of risk governance frameworks, industry best practices, and derivative regulatory/compliance environments
  • Proven ability to operate effectively in complex trading environments, synthesizing data and communicating clearly across global stakeholders and senior management
  • Demonstrated capability to build and enhance commodity risk management frameworks while maintaining independence and objective oversight of Front Office activities

Responsibilities

  • Lead, coach, and develop a Middle Office risk team supporting the global commodity trading desk
  • Oversee daily North American risk exposure and P&L reporting, serving as primary risk contact for Houston Crude, Products, and Freight desks in close coordination with Calgary, Canada and London, UK
  • Act as senior escalation point for risk issues and complex transactions, ensuring compliance with internal policies, external regulations, and approved market risk limits (exposure, VaR, stop loss)
  • Partner with Trading and Commercial teams to support new business initiatives, providing transparent analysis of complex transactions and key financial drivers
  • Own and strengthen the risk governance framework, driving regional and global process standardization, automation, control enhancements, and improved management reporting
  • Conduct ad hoc market and quantitative analysis, support cross-functional initiatives (including audits and IFRS reconciliation), and apply deep expertise in physical and financial energy markets
