MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES/ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS The primary job duties this position is responsible for achieving are listed in order of importance. 1. CLINICAL OPERATIONS & QUALITY OVERSIGHT (25%) • Manages day-to-day operations of Med-Surg and Oncology units. • Ensures delivery of safe, effective, evidence-based nursing care. • Oversees performance on falls, pressure injuries, CAUTI, CLABSI, sepsis, mortality, and readmissions. • Ensures safe administration of chemotherapy and biotherapy in accordance with ONS standards. • Monitors compliance with Joint Commission, CMS, CDPH, and accreditation standards. • Leads quality improvement initiatives and corrective action planning. • Investigates clinical incidents and patient complaints. 2. POLICY & PROCEDURE GOVERNANCE (20%) • Maintains ownership of all unit-specific clinical policies and procedures. • Leads development, review, revision, and approval of Med-Surg and Oncology policies. • Ensures policies align with regulatory standards, evidence-based practice, and organizational guidelines. • Conducts annual policy review cycles and ensures documentation of compliance. • Collaborates with interdisciplinary stakeholders (pharmacy, infection prevention, medical staff) on policy updates. • Ensures implementation, staff education, and auditing of new or revised policies. • Maintains regulatory survey readiness through policy standardization and documentation integrity. 3. STAFFING & WORKFORCE LEADERSHIP (20%) • Develops staffing plans aligned with census, acuity, and oncology complexity. • Oversees hiring, onboarding, competency validation, and performance evaluations. • Ensures chemotherapy certification and specialty competencies are maintained. • Manages productivity, overtime, and premium pay. • Promotes retention, engagement, and succession planning strategies. 4. FINANCIAL STEWARDSHIP (20%) • Develops and manages unit operating budgets. • Monitors labor productivity and agency utilization. • Conducts FTE and variance analysis; advises leadership on significant deviations. • Oversees cost containment strategies, including high-cost oncology medication utilization in partnership with pharmacy. • Participates in capital equipment planning and resource allocation. 5. PATIENT THROUGHPUT & STRATEGIC ALIGNMENT (15%) • Monitors LOS, GMLOS variance, and discharge efficiency. • Collaborates with case management and physicians to optimize patient flow. • Ensures appropriate level-of-care placement. • Aligns unit goals with hospital strategic priorities and service line growth initiatives. • Supports implementation of new oncology therapies and clinical technologies.
