About The Position

The Clinical Risk Manager is responsible for identifying, analyzing, and mitigating risks that may affect patient safety, staff safety, regulatory compliance, and organizational liability. This role assists the hospital’s risk management program, is involved in adverse event investigations, ensures compliance with regulatory reporting requirements (e.g., state reporting systems, CMS), and partners with clinical and executive leadership to strengthen a culture of safety.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in Nursing, Healthcare Administration, or related field., required.
  • Minimum three (3) years clinical experience, required
  • Minimum three (3) years in risk management, quality, or patient safety, required.
  • Prior experience with hospital regulatory reporting systems.
  • Strong knowledge of CMS Conditions of Participation and accreditation standards.
  • Analytical thinking and attention to details: Demonstrates the ability to interpret complex information, identify trends, and develop data-driven solutions.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication, and presentation skills.
  • Investigative skills: Protactively researches issues, gathers relevant facts, and formulates actionable recommendations.
  • Confidentiality & Discretion: Consistently handles sensitive information with professionalism and strict confidentiality.
  • Executive Presence: Represents the organization with confidence, credibility, and professionalism in high‑level interactions.
  • Crisis Management: Responds effectively under pressure, navigating urgent or unexpected situations with sound judgment and composure. Comfort in handling challenging situations that may involve adverse outcomes
  • Proficiency in planning, coordinating and implementing patient and staff safety procedures
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team
  • Interest in continuous learning and a commitment to staying informed on regulatory changes
  • Consistent with that necessary to work in a variety of patient care and office settings.
  • Position requires some periods of standing, reaching, walking (during rounds) throughout the working day.

Nice To Haves

  • Master’s Degree is preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Assists in event reporting systems and ensure timely review of incidents, near-misses, and sentinel events.
  • Assists in conducting root cause analyses (RCAs), and apparent cause analyses (ACAs).
  • Identify trends and develop risk mitigation strategies.
  • Maintain risk registers and dashboards.
  • Collaborates with medical staff leadership to support Emergency Department Operations.
  • Ensure compliance with reporting requirements (e.g., CMS, state DOH, NYPORTS if applicable).
  • Assists with responses to regulatory agencies and accreditation bodies such as The Joint Commission and Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services.
  • Monitor changes in healthcare regulations affecting patient safety and liability.
  • Assists as liaison with legal counsel and malpractice carriers.
  • Assists with claims investigation, documentation preservation, and litigation support.
  • Participate in deposition preparation and case reviews.
  • Collaborate with Quality, Nursing, Medical Staff, and department leaders to reduce preventable harm.
  • Lead high-reliability initiatives and promote just culture principles.
  • Assists in the Development and monitor of corrective action plans.
  • Educate staff on event reporting, risk reduction, and documentation best practices.
  • Lead training sessions on disclosure and communication after adverse events.
  • Assist with the review and update policies related to risk management, patient safety, and compliance.
  • Ensure alignment with national best practices and accreditation standards.
