This position supports Mercy's philosophy of patient centered care by developing, expanding, and providing clinical pharmacy services. The Manager, Clinical Pharmacy Operations facilitates the development, implementation and maintenance of systems that promote desirable patient outcomes through safe, appropriate, cost-effective medication therapies.

  • Stays abreast with applicable federal and state laws and professional standards of practice; monitors and assures compliance with inpatient and outpatient measures.
  • Demonstrates fiscal accountability for department resources and the ability to achieve expected quality outcomes within the allocated resources while using benchmarking, data, and evidence-based medicine to lower costs.
  • Determines feasibility of new programs and services and develops new and improved services within assigned area through constant evaluation and tests of change.
  • Ensures that the Pharmacy Department delivers quality and timely services by maintaining an orderly workflow for all medication use systems.
  • Analyzes and implements quality improvement measures for improving organizational and pharmacy department performance.
  • Participates in tracking medication safety events and develops/implements improved procedures to minimize/prevent medication errors and to improve medication safety.
  • Assumes a lead role in developing the Medication Management (Pharmacy and Therapeutics) Committee agenda and research data.
  • Establishes and monitors medication use and expense benchmarks, providing input on changing drug expense trends and coordinating Medication Use Evaluations, as needed.
  • Assists with the coordination of medication shortages.
  • Conducts operational and therapeutic assessments, medication shortage impact analysis, and establishes, communicates, and implements the final plan.
  • Sustains professional competence and promotes development through participation in in-services, workshops, seminars, and professional organizations.
  • Supports educational mission through didactic and/or experiential training of pharmacy students, interns, and residents.
  • Manages human resource-related issues (scheduling, hiring, promotion, training, competency assessment and addressing personnel and performance issues) for direct reports and other staff members.
  • Works with staff on an ongoing basis to improve performance, guiding and coaching staff to identify solutions.
  • Completes performance evaluations and provides feedback to direct reports.
  • Promotes effective working relations and works effectively as part of a team inter- and intra-departmentally to facilitate the department's ability to meet its goals and objectives.
  • Develops, approves, interprets, communicates, and enforces hospital, departmental, and medication management policies, procedures, and standards to achieve departmental objectives.
  • Follows Mercy's safety guidelines, carries out job-specific safety duties and responsibilities, and promptly reports any unsafe conditions, situations, incidents and injuries.
  • 5 years hospital experience, Preferred.
  • Previous supervisory experience, preferred.
  • Doctorate of Pharmacy (PharmD) or Bachelor of Science (BS) degree in pharmacy, required.
  • Current Pharmacist Licensure in the State of Iowa or eligible for Iowa Board of Pharmacy pharmacist licensure.
  • Employment is contingent upon being licensed by the Iowa Board of Pharmacy by start date required.
  • Iowa Dependent Adult Abuse & Iowa Child Abuse Mandatory Reporter training required.
  • Postgraduate year 1 (PGY-1) and Postgraduate year 2 (PGY-2) residency preferred.
  • Board Pharmacy Specialties Certificated preferred.
