About The Position

The Social Work Manager is a key leadership role within the Care Management Social Work Department at Boston Medical Center, responsible for overseeing program operations, staff supervision, workflow management, and performance monitoring to ensure high-quality, patient-centered care across inpatient, outpatient, and emergency department settings. This role supports program development, quality improvement initiatives, and operational processes, including staff scheduling, timekeeping, resource allocation, and monitoring key performance indicators (KPIs),to ensure effective and efficient program delivery. The Social Work Manager will supervise social work staff, providing coaching, performance feedback, and professional development while fostering a collaborative, trauma-informed, and supportive team environment. POSITION SUMMARY: Provides direct supervision for the Social Workers in the Care Management department. Accountable for hiring, scheduling, supervising and completing performance appraisal process of all social work staff. Oversees the coordination of special projects and programs within the department including; BNI Program, Critical Incident Debriefing program, Intern Program, Clothing Bank, Bereavement, SW Continuing Education Program. Will also utilize clinical social work techniques and theory, to consults on, assess, and intervene with high-risk patients and their families regarding the impact/amelioration of emotional and social problems.

Requirements

  • Requires Master's Degree from an accredited school of Social Work.
  • Requires a Massachusetts Licensed Independent Clinical Social Worker
  • Requires a minimum of 3-5 years of full-time work experience as a Licensed Clinical Social Worker.
  • Knowledge of community resources and agencies in relation to health, illness, and disability.
  • Ability to mentor, guide and motivate direct reports through demonstration of best practices and leading by example.
  • Advanced interpersonal skills necessary to interact effectively with various healthcare professionals, to develop and maintain effective therapeutic relationships with patients and families, and to supervise graduate students.
  • Must be comfortable in a fast paced and dynamic work environment (sense of humor is valued).
  • Ability to work in an interdisciplinary team.
  • Cultural sensitivity and comfort with a wide range of racial and ethnic populations.
  • Excellent English communication skills (oral and written). Bilingual or multi-lingual skills (beyond that of English) appropriate to the patient population served is a plus.

Responsibilities

  • Ensures that the Care Management Social Work department operates smoothly, efficiently, and professionally on a daily basis across inpatient, outpatient, and ED settings.
  • Manages departmental workflows to ensure timely completion of assignments, adherence to high-quality clinical standards, and optimal patient care.
  • Creates and maintains staff schedules, addressing coverage gaps and staffing conflicts in collaboration with leadership.
  • Tracks employee hours, vacation/sick time, and ensures accurate payroll submission in coordination with hospital protocols.
  • Maintains departmental files, manuals, and records, ensuring accuracy and accessibility.
  • Provides backup support for administrative functions as needed and serves as a liaison between social work staff and other hospital departments to address operational or staffing-related issues.
  • Supervises social work staff, providing coaching, performance feedback, and professional development opportunities to foster a trauma-informed, collaborative, and high-performing team.
  • Assists with new hire set up (such as issuing keys, coordinating phone and computer set-up, etc.), orienting social workers to unit and campus. Coordinates cross training as needed.
  • Oversees the coordination of special projects and programs within the department including; BNI Program, Critical Incident Debriefing program, Intern Program, Clothing Bank, Bereavement, SW Continuing Education Program
  • Assists manager with hiring, scheduling, and completing performance appraisal process of all social work staff.
  • Participates in the departmental on-call rotation, providing clinical and operational support as needed, evenings, nights and weekends.
  • Leads and supports initiatives aimed at improving patient outcomes, social work processes, and program efficiency.
  • Identifies opportunities to develop clinical programs addressing systemic challenges faced by vulnerable populations, including patients experiencing housing instability, behavioral health needs, substance use, and social determinants of health.
  • Participates in quality improvement initiatives and implements actionable solutions based on operational and clinical data.
  • Monitors key performance indicators (KPIs), tracks program metrics, and generates reports to inform decision-making and program enhancement.
  • Prepares reports, spreadsheets, presentations, and correspondence for leadership as needed.
  • Consolidates and prioritizes communications, responding on behalf of leadership when appropriate.
  • Schedules meetings, coordinates technology requirements, and supports departmental events or initiatives.
  • Ensures timely and accurate data collection, maintains comprehensive data management systems, and analyzes information to evaluate program performance.
  • Oversees grant-related activities, including reporting, budget management, and compliance monitoring when applicable.
  • Remains knowledgeable of and adheres to hospital policies, procedures, and work standards, including those related to hours of work, attendance, and confidentiality.
  • Maintains current knowledge of evidence-based, patient-centered, trauma-informed, and culturally responsive interventions for behavioral health, substance use, and complex social needs.
  • Conducts and oversees comprehensive biopsychosocial assessments to identify social determinants of health and reduce barriers to care and discharge.
  • Provides strength-based, whole-person interventions to patients and families and ensures staff are trained to deliver trauma-informed, equitable care.
  • Collaborates with multidisciplinary teams to address patient and family needs related to illness, injury, or hospitalization, and promotes continuity of care.
  • Advocates for, educates, and empowers patients and families to enhance health equity, access, and engagement.
  • Oversees department-wide operations, quality, and compliance, ensuring efficient workflows, program effectiveness, and alignment with hospital standards.
  • Provides leadership, supervision, mentorship, and professional development for social work staff, fostering a supportive, collaborative, and high-performing team environment.
  • Participates in program development, quality improvement initiatives, and strategic planning, using data to guide decisions and evaluate program outcomes.
  • Supports teaching, supervision, and mentorship of social work interns and other trainees, and contributes to curriculum or training development as needed.
  • Assists in developing and improving programs and processes to address complex discharges, reduce barriers to timely patient discharge, and optimize length of stay across the hospital or network.
  • Promotes a positive, collaborative work environment, demonstrates critical thinking, and adapts to changing departmental needs.
  • Uses data, metrics, and evidence-based practices to monitor program performance, implement improvements, and drive operational and clinical excellence.
  • Demonstrates strong communication, problem-solving, and organizational skills to lead staff, manage complex cases, and build partnerships with patients, families, clinical teams, and community organizations.
