About The Position

Reporting to the Director, Mental Health, Oncology and Palliative Care, this position is responsible for providing creative and innovative leadership ensuring the delivery of quality patient care within the Cancer Care program. The scope of the role involves providing management, administrative and clinical leadership to all staff in a supportive, empowering manner while facilitating the effective and efficient use of staff resources, flow of patients and management of incidents or issues as they arise. Strategic leadership is a key responsibility in this role to ensure alignment of the work in the program with the hospital strategic plan. Through this, the development of the program’s vision and participating in regional planning with our partners to actively identify opportunities for strategic growth and innovation. The scope of the role includes effectively managing financial and human resources, overseeing clinical operations, promoting excellence in safe, efficient, patient centered care, and advancing team effectiveness within a Professional Practice Model. As an important member of the program leadership team, the Manager will work collaboratively with all members of the health care team including physicians, to ensure the efficient and effective delivery of patient care services within the Program. The Manager is responsible for the effective operational functions of the daily activities within the department with the continuous focus of enhancing the patient and family experience.

Requirements

  • Baccalaureate degree in Nursing or Health Administration with membership in relevant professional association, Master’s Degree preferred
  • Minimum of five (5) years recent leadership experience coupled with a strong clinical background in Cancer Care
  • Demonstrated ability to establish effective interpersonal relationships and collaboration with interdisciplinary teams and external regional partners
  • Excellent interpersonal skills and experience in human resources management within a unionized environment (negotiation, conflict resolution/management, and mediation)
  • Demonstrated ability to support and initiate quality management activities
  • Evidence of planning, analysis and organizational experience
  • Strong business and financial management experience
  • Effective leadership skills with the proven ability to develop strong teams
  • Strong project management skills and a demonstrated ability to effectively plan and implement new initiatives
  • Demonstrated pattern of good attendance and work record
  • Basic computer skills (Word, Excel and PowerPoint)
  • Ability to manage multiple competing priorities in a fast-paced environment
  • Excellent problem solving and change management skills
  • Excellent oral, interpersonal, and written communication skills
  • Demonstrates an understanding of and commitment to SHN’s comprehensive safety programs and practices including staff safety, patient safety, environmental safety and participates in regular in-service education provided by SHN
  • Demonstrates a commitment to customer service when dealing with patients, colleagues, volunteers and other members of the community and public
  • Ability to travel between sites when necessary

Responsibilities

  • Developing and implementing the clinical service, functional and strategic plans for the program, aligned with SHN’s strategic plan
  • Identifying the required the organizational supports and structures for safe and efficient operation for the department
  • Enhancing key partnerships to further support the program, patients and their families
  • Establishing a professional practice climate that encourages a multi-disciplinary approach to patient care
  • Ensuring that patient care is provided according to professional practice, corporate standards, and cancer care evidence-based practice
  • Manage all aspects of employee relations including human resource planning, recruitment, performance management, coaching/mentoring and professional development
  • Actively support the development of new innovative programs, outreach and engagement initiatives
  • Effectively managing the financial, human, physical space and equipment of the department in alignment with SHN’s strategic plans
  • Developing effective processes for selecting, evaluating and maintaining material/equipment needed for enhancing patient care
  • Developing and maintaining effective interdepartmental relationships and team-focused culture
  • Identify quality improvement initiatives and opportunities for continuous improvement throughout the program, with a focus on an optimal patient and family experience.
