About The Position

The Manager, Access Services ensures that Scott Memorial Library (SML) patrons receive high-quality and consistent service through leadership of the Access Services staff, knowledge of library and university resources and services, creative problem solving, and long-term planning. Scott Memorial Library is the largest of the Thomas Jefferson University Libraries located on the center City Campus and serving the university’s health science programs and research. The university libraries are part of the Academic Commons. The Access Services desk at SML is the first point of contact for most patrons, whether in person, on the phone or electronically in chat and email, and the staff provides 90 hours of service a week, Sunday - Saturday.

Requirements

  • Knowledge of academic library operations, particularly circulation/access services
  • Proven high-level customer service skills.
  • Ability to communicate in a variety of modalities (in person, text/SMS, email, and telephone) clearly and effectively with a diverse community: Access Services staff, students, faculty, academic staff, Academic Commons colleagues, alumni and members of the general public.
  • Demonstrable knowledge of library and office technology; automated library systems (Alma/Primo), MS Office, Springshare tools, etc.
  • Demonstrable organizational and project management skills.
  • Ability to solve problems, think critically, assess and prioritize operational needs.
  • Ability to focus and work in a busy environment.
  • Ability to work collaboratively and to demonstrate teamwork in action.
  • Interest in expanding professional knowledge of library and educational technology.
  • Bachelor’s degree required
  • Minimum five years’ experience working at a library circulation or access services desk.
  • Minimum two years’ supervisory experience
  • Experience working in an academic or health sciences library required
  • Experience using library & office technologies: preferably Alma/Primo; Springshare suite: LibAnswers, LibCal, LibGuides; MS Office & Teams.

  • course towards or completion of an MLS/MILS/MI from ALA accredited graduate program preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Manages and coordinates the daily activities of SML Access Services: circulation of library & learning center materials; maintenance of stacks; management of group & individual study spaces; and copying & printing services.
  • Develops and implements departmental policies and procedures.
  • Manages Access Department staff, 3.5FTE plus student workers (three to five a semester): training & development; setting work schedules & coordinating desk coverage; setting priorities; approving timecards; conducting annual performance evaluations.
  • Guides Access Services Coordinator in hiring, training and supervision of student workers and working with Financial Aid office to ensure compliance with regulatory guidelines.
  • Coordinates with other SML managers and associate directors to assign Access Services staff to work and projects emanating from other departments.
  • Coordinates collection of statistics (census, Access desk activity, etc.) for reporting to Library and Academic Commons leadership.
  • With libraries leadership sets service calendar, and manages calendar in LibCal for Scott spaces.
  • Liaises with Thomas Jefferson University Public Safety and Facilities/Housekeeping to maintain safe, clean, and secure environment at Scott Memorial Library.
  • With Scott Memorial Library leadership, helps coordinate use of Scott spaces by other university & student groups.
  • Provides circulation services and information assistance to patrons in person, by phone, email, and chat.
  • Refers in-depth queries to colleagues in the appropriate SML department.
  • Interprets library services and policies for members of the Jefferson community.
  • Is an active member of the Scott Memorial Library managerial team.
  • Other duties as assigned.
